Basil Notes - Holmes

Basil has always been considered one of the best remedies for damp and tense bronchial conditions such as productive bronchitis, wet asthma, etc. as well as a specific for sinusitis with loss of smell. It’s not surprising that researchers found basil essential oil often to work better in respiratory infections than Thyme essential oil.

Rather than looking at its various actions in isolation, its important to grasp Basil’s overall character and thereby note the systemic conditions that it addresses, Basil should be seen as a warming, drying and restoring Kidney Yang tonic with a focus on the respiratory, reproductive and nervous systems. It has shown sympathetic nervousand adrenocortical stimulant actions. Even more than Hyssop, Basil should be used as a support to the body’s Yang for asthmatic and bronchial conditions when fatigue, cold and depression are prominent—in the same way that Cordyceps is used in Chinese medicine.

Two other features make Basil distinctive. First, an excellent spasmolyticaction that is mainly applied in intestinal colic, IBS, and asthma- constrained Qi conditionsof the intestines and lungs. Second, a cerebral and nervous restorative effect that can be used in first aid for shock and fainting, as well as for chronic neurasthenic conditions. Like Hyssop and Wood betony, Basil is a good antidepressant and should be used especially for those prone to any of the above conditions.
