sP-Selectin

A biomarker for inflammation. increases with aging.

Soluble platelet selectin (sP-selectin) is the soluble form of P-selectin, a membrane glycoprotein expressed by activated platelets and endothelial cells. sP-selectin is a marker for atherosclerosis and inflammation, and can provide prognostic information on cardiovascular events.

sP-selectin is released by the granules and can be measured in plasma. It is hypothesized to play a role in the initiation of atherosclerosis and acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

The selectin family of carbohydrate-binding proteins includes three known selectins: L-, E-, and P-selectins. L-selectin is expressed constitutively on lymphocytes, E-selectin is expressed by activated endothelial cells, and P-selectin is expressed by activated platelets and endothelial cells
