Monkeypox

Above you'll find Monkeypox Tracker, keeping track of it's global spread in real time.

There are two types of monkeypox virus: Clade I and Clade II.

Clade I is found in the Congo Basin and causes up to 10% human mortality. It's transmitted by rodents and has little human-to-human spread.

Clade I is capable of human-to-human spread but has previously been associated with non-sexual routes of transmission.

The other clade of monkeypox virus is Clade II, which exists in West Africa and has a low mortality. Infections with Clade IIb are rarely fatal.

The illness typically lasts 2-4 weeks. It's characterized by rash or skin lesions that are usually concentrated on the face, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. The typical rash progresses through several stages over 1-2 weeks.

Unlike SARS-CoV-2, which spreads through tiny air-borne droplets called aerosols, monkeypox is thought to spread from close contact with bodily fluids, such as saliva from coughing. That means a person with monkeypox is likely to infect far fewer close contacts than someone with SARS-CoV-2. Both viruses can cause flu-like symptoms, but monkeypox also triggers enlarged lymph nodes and, eventually, distinctive fluid-filled lesions on the face, hands and feet. Most people recover from monkeypox in a few weeks without treatment.

July 17, 2022 The Absolutely Terrifying Truth About This New Monkeypox Pandemic A lot of people out there are downplaying this new monkeypox pandemic, and I believe that is a huge mistake. If a smallpox outbreak had suddenly erupted, everyone would be totally freaking out. But the general public doesn’t seem very alarmed about monkeypox even though it is very closely related to smallpox. According to the official CDC website, monkeypox “is part of the same family of viruses as variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox”. In the past, monkeypox has not spread easily among humans, but something has changed that has now made that possible. As I detailed last week, scientists are telling us that approximately 50 key mutations have turned this bug into something new that we haven’t seen before.

Most people seem to think that the hideous sores that this virus produces on the skin are the most frightening aspect of this disease, but that isn’t true.

Many of the victims that have had monkeypox so far are telling us that the worst part is the absolutely excruciating pain. In fact, one man that has had both COVID and monkeypox says that monkeypox is “100 times worse”…

Monkeypox has now spread to 76 different countries, and a total of 12,701 cases have been reported.

That may not sound like a lot, but the number of cases has continued to rise at an exponential pace.

If the number of cases continues to double at the current rate, it won’t be too long before we are facing a nightmare scenario… Read more at above link

June 23, 2022: ‘A coalition of scientists formed against the Covid-19 threat has declared the Monkeypox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of Global Concern. This comes days after the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee has been convened due to the spread of the Monkeypox virus to 32 non-endemic countries.

The World Health Network declares the monkeypox outbreak a Public Health Emergency of Global Concern, by which it indicates that this outbreak is not limited to a single country or region and should be addressed by immediate actions taken wherever community transmission is taking place in order to ensure that the least effort is needed and the smallest impact is suffered due to this outbreak,” the WHN said.” Source

1988 The transmission potential of monkeypox virus in human populations Data on monkeypox in Zaire over the five years 1980-1984 are analysed to assess the protection imparted by past smallpox vaccination and the transmission potential of the virus in unvaccinated communities. Attack rates in individuals with and without vaccination scars indicated that smallpox vaccination (discontinued in 1980) imparted approximately 85% protection against monkeypox. It is predicted that monkeypox virus will continue to be introduced into human communities from animal sources, and that the average magnitude and duration of monkeypox epidemics will increase as vaccine-derived protection declines in the population. On the other hand, current evidence indicates that the virus is appreciably less transmissible than was smallpox, and that it will not persist in human communities, even in the total absence of vaccination. The findings thus support the recommendation of the Global Commission for the Certification of Smallpox Eradication to cease routine smallpox vaccination in monkeypox endemic areas, but to encourage continued epidemiological surveillance.

May 25 2022 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Jynneos vaccine is being released to potential high-risk contacts of the early monkeypox patients. The two-dose vaccine was intended to prevent smallpox and specifically to fight monkeypox. There are reportedly approximately 1,000 doses of the approved vaccine in the US, while there are millions of doses of an older smallpox vaccine, though there could be severe side effects to the treatment.

Monkeypox: a new variant? Looks like quite a lot of divergence by DNA virus standards has occurred: maybe a new variant or strain of Monkeypox is also driving the spread: 94 nucleotide changes and 51 amino acid: that seems extremely high for a DNA virus.

Website Medicinfo writes the following about the monkeypox vaccine: “The disease can be prevented by avoiding contact with animals such as monkeys, squirrels and other animals. The monkeypox infection can be partially prevented by vaccination. However, the risk of complications from the vaccine is almost as great as the risk of developing the disease. A mass vaccination program against monkeypox is not practical because the disease is rare. The smallpox vaccine offers some protection against monkeypox.”

May 18, 2022 U.S. monkeypox case reported, as Spain, Portugal report infections in growing outbreak A small number of people who’ve caught monkeypox, a chickenpox-like infection, has been identified in the United Kingdom, United States, Spain and Portugal. Some of these individuals have not travelled to West or Central Africa, where the disease is more common and is thought to jump to people through contact with wild animals. This suggests that the virus is spreading under the radar in the United States and Europe. “We’re seeing this expansion of confirmed and suspect cases globally,” says Jennifer McQuiston at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “We have a sense that no one has their arms around this to know how large and expansive it might be.”

Sept 2019 FDA Approves Smallpox, Monkeypox Vaccine

Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research, hence the name ‘monkeypox.’ The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox. Since then, monkeypox has been reported in humans in other central and western African countries. Human monkeypox infections have only been documented six times outside of Africa; in the United States in 2003 (47 cases), in both the United Kingdom (3 cases) and Israel (1 case) in 2018, in Singapore in 2019 (1 case) and in both the United Kingdom (3 cases) and the United States (1 case) in 2021.

There are two distinct genetic groups (clades) of monkeypox virus—Central African and West African. Human infections with the Central African monkeypox virus clade are typically more severe compared to those with the West African virus clade and have a higher mortality. Person-to-person spread is well-documented for Central African monkeypox virus and limited with West African monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a relative of smallpox, a disease which was eradicated in 1980, but is less transmissible, causes milder symptoms and is less deadly.

The illness typically lasts for two to four weeks and symptoms can appear anywhere from five to 21 days after infection.

Monkeypox symptoms usually begin with a mix of fever, headaches, muscle aches, backache, chills, exhaustion, and swollen lymph nodes.

This latter symptom is typically what helps doctors distinguish monkeypox from chickenpox or smallpox, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Once you have a fever, the key feature of monkeypox, a nasty rash, tends to develop one to three days later, often starting on the face and then spreading to other parts of the body.

The number of lesions may range from a few to thousands.

The lesions will go through an ugly ripening process, from macules (flat lesions) to papules (raised lesions), vesicles (fluid-filled lesions), then pustules (pus-filled lesions) and then finally scabs (crusty lesions) before eventually falling off.

How do you catch monkeypox?

You can catch the virus from the bite or scratch of an infected animal, by eating bush meat, being in direct contact with an infected human or touching contaminated bedding or clothing.

The virus enters the body through skin lesions, the respiratory tract, or the mucous membranes (the eyes, nose, or mouth).

Human-to-human transmission is thought to occur primarily through large respiratory droplets, which generally cannot travel more than a few feet, so prolonged face-to-face contact would be needed.
