Slash Pine
Listing on Duke's Database
Profile
The slash pine (Pinus elliottii) native range includes the entire state of Florida and in the southern counties of Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. The range is limited but it's commercial planting area has expanded because of pleasing associated properties.
With improved fire protection and heavy cutting/loss of longleaf pine forests, slash pine has increased as a preferred pine to plant. Pinus elliottii's increase in acreage has been possible because of the pine's frequent and abundant seed production, rapid early growth, and ability to withstand wildfires and wildlife damage.
Slash pine is a commercially important pine tree and one of the most frequently planted timber species in North America.
Major Identification Markers: needle clusters of two and three; cones long at 4", short stalked; twigs are stout, red-dish-brown scales
