Human Intelligence: What Single Neurons Can Tell Us
MIT uncovers the hidden playbook your brain uses to outsmart complicated problems. Human brain excels at problem-solving. When faced with a tricky maze task involving hidden information, humans instinctively toggle between two clever mental strategies: simplifying in steps or mentally rewinding. MIT researchers showed that people shift methods based on how reliable their memory is echoed by AI models mimicking the same constraints.
Intelligence emerges when the whole brain works as one. For decades, scientists have mapped attention, memory, language, and reasoning to separate brain networks — yet one big mystery remained: why does the mind feel like a single, unified system? Researchers at the University of Notre Dame now suggest that intelligence doesn’t live in one “smart” region of the brain at all. Instead, it emerges from how efficiently and flexibly the brain’s many network
Early Life Diet Linked to Adolescent Intelligence. Researchers discovered discovered that sub-optimal nutrition during the first years of life correlates with lower intelligence scores during adolescence, even after accounting for external confounding influences.
Men Think They’re Brighter Than They Are and Women Underestimate Their IQ. Why? Despite there being no differences in IQ or general intelligence between males and females, men often overestimate their IQ's, considering them to be higher than females. Researchers explore why this matters in an educational context and evaluate why females often underestimate their intellectual abilities.
Brain area necessary for fluid intelligence identified Fluid intelligence is arguably the defining feature of human cognition. It predicts educational and professional success, social mobility, health, and longevity. It also correlates with many cognitive abilities such as memory.
Fluid intelligence is thought to be a key feature involved in "active thinking" -- a set of complex mental processes such as those involved in abstraction, judgment, attention, strategy generation and inhibition. These skills can all be used in everyday activities -- from organising a dinner party to filling out a tax return.
Despite its central role in human behaviour, fluid intelligence remains contentious, with regards to whether it is a single or a cluster of cognitive abilities, and the nature of its relationship with the brain.

Dopamine relative genes may modify the association between fluoride and intelligence,
Fluoride is inversely associated with intelligence.
Excessive fluoride exposure may have adverse effects on children's intelligence.
