Mannose / D-Mannose

Generally found as part of heteropolysaccharides or as sugar units on glycosides.

A few studies indicate that aromatic mannose derivatives could prevent the binding of certain pathogens to epithelial tissue in vitro and in animal studies; on the basis of this idea, it has been sold as a natural supplement for urinary tract infections. However, there is little scientific evidence to indicate that pure mannose can reach high enough concentrations in the bladder or can have enough of an anti-adherence effect to be useful in this regard. Mannose also occurs in the Cranberry along with phenolic compounds called proanthocyanidins, which do exhibit a significant anti-adherence effect. Perhaps, in this context, the mannose could have synergistic activity. (Ganora)
