Clematis catesbyana is native to the eastern United States. It is most common in the southern Ozarks, but can also be found on the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain.

- Plant in full sun to maximize flower production.
- Plant the clematis about 45 centimeters away from the base of a wall.
- Angle the plant so it gets all the rain when it rains.
- Add a sprinkling of bonemeal to help the roots grow.
It can take two to three years for clematis to flourish because its complex root system takes time to establish
