Milarepa
Milarepa (c. 1052–1135) is one of Tibet’s most beloved saints and yogis, celebrated as a model of complete spiritual transformation. Born into hardship and driven by revenge in his youth, he turned to black magic that caused great suffering—yet, overwhelmed with remorse, he sought out the teacher Marpa, who subjected him to years of grueling trials before bestowing the liberating teachings. Through intense meditation in solitary mountain caves, Milarepa attained full enlightenment within a single lifetime, embodying the highest realization of Mahamudra. His spontaneous songs of realization (dohās), expressing the unity of emptiness and luminosity, remain among Tibet’s most revered spiritual poetry. As the patriarch of the Kagyu lineage, Milarepa’s life demonstrates that even one burdened by great misdeeds can awaken through unwavering devotion, discipline, and insight.
