Gzhi

In Tibetan thought, gzhi (གཞི་) means the ground or basis—the fundamental state from which all phenomena arise and into which they dissolve. In Dzogchen, it is the primordial ground of being, the inseparable unity of emptiness (stong pa nyid), clarity or luminosity (gsal ba), and compassionate energy (thugs rje). This ground is not something created or attained; it is the ever-present, self-existing nature of awareness itself (rigpa), beyond birth and death, samsara and nirvana. All experiences, pure or impure, manifest as spontaneous expressions (rang snang) of this ground, like reflections in a mirror, without altering its intrinsic purity or perfection.
