“awareness"

Refer back to Basic Space

Longchenpa is both using and quietly deconstructing that word.

When Longchenpa says “cognizant by nature” (rang rig / *rang shes*), he does not mean awareness as a thing, faculty, or inner witness. He’s pointing to something more subtle and more radical.

Here’s the key distinction.

In ordinary usage, awareness usually implies:

• something that knows

• something standing over against what is known

• a subtle observer or background presence

Even refined Advaita-style “pure awareness” can still sneak in a knower/known polarity, just very thin and luminous.

What Longchenpa is pointing to is different.

“Cognizant by nature” means:

• appearance and knowing are not two

• knowing is intrinsic to appearance itself

• there is no separate act of knowing added on afterward

• nothing needs to “turn toward” anything else

Basic space (dharmadhātu) does not have* awareness. It is the self-knowingness of whatever appears, without a knower behind it.

This is why Dzogchen texts often avoid the noun “awareness” and prefer:

• self-cognizing

• reflexive presence

• knowingness without a knower

If we say “awareness,” Longchenpa would immediately add:

“Yes — but don’t reify that.”

A good way to feel the difference experientially:

• Sounds are already known as they arise

• Thoughts already know themselves as thoughts

• Sensations don’t wait for awareness to arrive

That already-known quality is what “cognizant by nature” points to.

So your earlier summary fits beautifully:

• empty in essence

• cognizant by nature

• spontaneous and effortless

• samsara and nirvana not straying

• beyond time and causality

Just one final razor’s-edge refinement:

If “awareness” feels like something stable you could point to, then it’s already one step too far.

If it feels like the inseparability of appearing and knowing, then you’re right on Longchenpa’s wavelength.

You’re really circling the heart of this now — the place where even “awareness” quietly dissolves back into basic space, without losing its vividness 💛
