VISION QUEST

My notes from: Honoring the Medicine, Cohen, 2003, page 98:
“A vision is a mystical experience of seeing or knowing, Native Americans believe that it is a gift from Spirit, a source of wisdom and guidance beyond the individual self. In the previous two chapters I discussed spiritual powers and gifts. It is through visions that we connect with these powers and find out what our unique gifts are and how to use them. Visions can point out a meaningful life path and provide answers to important life questions, such as where t live or what kind of career would be most fulfilling. Knowledge of healing songs and methods, spiritual dances, the design of medicine bundles, or the location and properties of herbs ma come to a healer during a vision. We can all have access to visionary realms at times of deep intuition, during powerful dreams, and in expanded states of consciousness, when the boudnary between waking and dreaming becomes fluid and tenuous. In The Varieties of Religious Experience, author William James describes this potential as follows:
(O)ur normal waking conscious, rational consciousness as we call it, is but one special type of consciousness, whilst all about it, parted from it by the filmiest of screens, there lie potential forms of consciousness entirely different. We may go through life without suspecting their existence; but apply the requisite stimulus, and at a touch they are there in all their completeness…”
(from: William James, 1902, New York, New American Library, 1958, p298.)
The most powerful visions come during the Vision Quest, an important activity in all Native American cultures.”
