Peter Malanczuk, Hardware Recommendations for Large Brain and Local AI #100765

Hello Peter,

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing the Brain statistics.

TheBrain 14 runs on both macOS and Windows, so I would not say there is an official platform preference for TheBrain itself. For a large Brain, the main things I would prioritize are memory, fast internal SSD storage, and overall system responsiveness.

For TheBrain use alone, I would avoid a low memory machine. A system with 32 GB RAM or unified memory should be a reasonable starting point for a large Brain, but if you are buying a new laptop now and want it to last, 48 GB or 64 GB would be safer.

Since local AI is part of your plan, I would not recommend choosing the lowest memory configuration. From the MacBook Pro options you are considering, the 24 GB / 1 TB model should run TheBrain, but I would treat it as the lower end for your future AI goal. I would lean more toward the M5 Pro or M5 Max configuration with at least 48 GB unified memory and 2 TB storage. If budget allows and local AI is a serious priority, 64 GB or higher unified memory would give you more headroom.

On the Windows side, I would look closely at the NVIDIA GPU memory, not only the processor name. For local AI, VRAM matters a lot.

As a rough guide:

• 8 GB VRAM: entry level for smaller local AI models

• 12 GB VRAM: better baseline, workable for more local AI use

• 16 GB VRAM: a stronger practical target for a new AI focused laptop

• 24 GB VRAM or more: excellent, but usually more expensive and less common in laptops

So if you choose a Lenovo Legion or similar Windows laptop, I would look for 64 GB system RAM if possible, a 1 TB or 2 TB SSD, and an NVIDIA RTX GPU with at least 12 GB VRAM, preferably 16 GB if the budget allows.

For your situation, a MacBook Pro with 48 GB or 64 GB unified memory is probably the simpler path if you want fewer technical steps. A Windows laptop with a strong NVIDIA RTX GPU may be better if local AI performance is the main priority, but I would only go that route if you are comfortable with a bit more setup and maintenance.

I would avoid a 16 GB RAM laptop for this use case.

Best regards,

John
