Thank you for taking the time to write this up. The use case makes sense, especially if you are standardizing on type icons and only overriding them in special cases.

If you can share which API call you are currently using to set the thought icon, we can sanity check whether there is an existing documented way to clear or unset it (for example, an update operation that accepts a blank or null icon value, or a dedicated delete icon style operation if available).

If there is no supported way to unset a thought-level icon via the API, then the best path is to submit this as a feature suggestion on UserVoice so it can be tracked and voted on:
