Hello Peter,

Thank you for the update.

Please make sure any of your version 8 brains have first been opened in the most recent build of TheBrain 8.0.2.2, which you can download here:

https://assets.thebrain.com/downloads/TheBrain_windows_8_0_2_2.exe

Once confirmed, follow these steps to migrate your data to version 15:

  1. Open your Brain in TheBrain 8.
  2. Go to File > Create BrainZip and save it somewhere accessible (this creates a complete portable backup).
  3. Close TheBrain 8.
  4. Open TheBrain 14 or 15.
  5. Go to File > Import.
  6. Select “TheBrain 8 Brain (.brainzip)” and click Select File.
  7. Locate the .brainzip you created, then click Open.
  8. Let the import process complete, note that “Updating Icons” may take the longest and can appear paused for a bit.

If you tried importing the original .brain folder and saw the message “Failed to open database. Exception: The type initializer for 'org.h2.Driver' threw an exception,” please do the following before retrying:

  1. Close TheBrain 8.
  2. Open File Explorer.
  3. Navigate to your [BrainName]_brain folder.
  4. Rename the subfolder “brain_db” to “brainold_db”.
  5. Reopen TheBrain 8.
  6. Create a new BrainZip and import that instead.

Using the BrainZip method ensures all metadata is preserved correctly during migration and avoids the missing metadata issue you encountered.

Best regards,

John
