Why data corruption using onedrive? #97740

Hello Matthew,
Thank you for reaching out.
You're absolutely right to be cautious when handling sensitive data, especially in a professional environment with strict security policies.
The warning about network drives appears because TheBrain is a live, file-based database, and it requires fast, uninterrupted file access. Network drives and services like OneDrive, Dropbox, or Google Drive often introduce latency or sync conflicts. This can lead to file locking, partial writes, or data corruption, especially if TheBrain tries to access or save a file while it’s being synced or scanned in the background.
For this reason, we strongly recommend storing your Brains locally as intended by the software and avoiding any active storage paths that involve real-time syncing.
That said, if your company does not allow the use of TheBrain Cloud, there are some safer workarounds:
- Store your Brains locally on your device (as recommended), and then:
- Use OneDrive or another secure sync tool to back up a copy of your Brains folder periodically, rather than pointing TheBrain directly to OneDrive as its storage location.
- Consider automating this backup outside of TheBrain itself (e.g., using file sync scripts or backup software).
This allows you to maintain your company’s security policies without putting your Brain data at risk.
If you have any other questions down the line, feel free to reach out, I’m here to help.
Best regards,
John
