Lost the thought 'Computer' and restoring it #97933

Hello James,
Thank you for your patience, I completely understand how discouraging it is to lose an important Thought like “Computer.” Let’s carefully restore it from your backup.
A .brz file is a full snapshot of your Brain at the time it was created. It doesn’t automatically merge or overwrite your current Brain, it must be restored separately. Here’s the correct way to do it:
- Create a new empty Brain
- In TheBrain, go to File › New Brain.
- Give it a temporary name such as Restore Test (this ensures there’s no conflict with your current Brain).
- Import your backup into that new Brain
- With Restore Test open, go to File › Import › Brain Archive (.brz).
- Select your backup file (for example,
MyBrain1 2025-09-02.brz). - When prompted, choose to add it under a new Thought.
- TheBrain will unpack the backup into this separate Brain.
- Recover your missing Thought
- Once the import finishes, search for your “Computer” Thought.
- When found, right-click it and choose Copy Thought(s) to Another Brain…
- Select your main working Brain (e.g., MyBrain1).
- Return to your current Brain and confirm
- Open MyBrain1, locate the restored “Computer” Thought, and verify its Notes and links.
If the import still fails or opens the wrong Brain, the .brz file might be in a cloud-synced folder (like OneDrive). Please move it to a purely local folder such as Documents > TheBrain Backups and try again, OneDrive interference can cause the “openfile:C:\…” path error you saw earlier.
You didn’t double up your Brain, it likely attempted a large merge during the import, which can take some time. Following the steps above should let you safely recover your missing Thought without overwriting anything.
Best regards,
John
