Performance #98510

Hello Julian,
Great question, and thanks for considering TheBrain for complex manufacturing maps. There isn’t a hard limit on Brain size; many users comfortably run Brains with 100,000 to over 200,000 thoughts. What really matters is hardware and structure. For large Brains, we recommend at least 16 GB of RAM (32 GB preferred), an NVMe SSD for fast indexing and search, and a modern multi-core processor with strong single-core performance. GPU power isn’t critical, but newer integrated or entry-level discrete graphics help the interface stay smooth on high-resolution displays.
Dense tag hierarchies and very large internal attachments can slow things down, so we generally suggest linking big files externally from a local SSD folder rather than embedding them. After large imports or merges, it’s best to run File › Utilities › Rebuild Brain Index to keep everything responsive.
TheBrain 15 is currently in a pre-alpha stage and built on a newer engine that’s far more efficient for scaling large data sets. If you switch between TheBrain 14 and 15 on the same database, make sure to disable Light Sync Attachments in the top-right Sync menu first so both versions stay in sync cleanly. Also, keep your live Brains on a local SSD instead of inside OneDrive or iCloud folders, and use .brz backups for safe cloud storage.
Best regards,
John
