Update GDrive as backup #97307

https://thebrain.zendesk.com/agent/tickets/97307

Hello Josh,

That’s a great question, and yes, linking to files or folders that happen to live inside a Google Drive–synced location is perfectly safe as long as they’re only linked, not stored inside your actual Brain data folder.

In other words, if your Brain is stored locally (for example, in ~/Documents/Brains), but you link to files or folders elsewhere, even those mirrored by Google Drive, there’s no corruption risk. TheBrain simply keeps a path reference; it doesn’t try to read or write to those external files directly.

So your workflow is fine: you can edit those linked files normally, and Drive will sync them independently. The main rule is just never to place the Brain itself or its internal “Brains” folder within a cloud-synced directory.

Best regards,

John
