Great question, and thank you for reaching out.

By default, all Brains synced to https://app.thebrain.com are private and only accessible with your login credentials. Nothing is publicly visible unless you specifically enable sharing.

The public/private lock icon on individual Thoughts only comes into play if you choose to make a Brain publicly accessible via Online > Brain Access and Sharing > Allow Public Access.

• Public Thoughts → visible to anyone with access to the shared Brain.
• Private Thoughts → remain hidden, even if the rest of the Brain is public. Only you (as the owner/administrator) can see them.

At this time, there isn’t a global setting to make all new Thoughts private by default, you control visibility on a per-Thought basis once public sharing is enabled.
