Objective C

Objective-C is a general-purpose, object-oriented programming language that adds Smalltalk-style message passing to the C language. Created in the early 1980s by Brad Cox and Tom Love, it became the primary language for developing applications on NeXTSTEP and later Apple’s macOS and iOS platforms through the Cocoa and Cocoa Touch frameworks. As a strict superset of C, it allows developers to freely mix C and Objective-C code, and it is compiled by toolchains such as GCC and Clang.

The language emphasizes dynamic dispatch, runtime introspection, and a message-passing model that supports flexible, component-based software design. Objective-C’s class and category system, protocol-based multiple inheritance of interface, and reference-counted memory management (later augmented by Automatic Reference Counting, ARC) shaped the architecture of many Apple ecosystems. Although largely superseded by Swift for new Apple development since 2014, Objective-C remains important for maintaining existing codebases and interoperates closely with Swift.

Answers

  1. B. C
  2. C. Brad Cox and Tom Love
  3. NeXTSTEP
  4. Cocoa (for macOS) and Cocoa Touch (for iOS)
  5. It means Objective-C includes all of C’s features and syntax while adding its own object-oriented extensions, so any valid C program can be compiled as Objective-C.
  6. A. GCC and Clang
  7. Swift
  8. Reference-counted memory management (manual reference counting).
  9. Dynamic dispatch and runtime introspection (also: message passing, categories, protocols).
  10. Objective-C was the primary language for building applications on NeXTSTEP and, later, on Apple’s macOS and iOS platforms through the Cocoa and Cocoa Touch frameworks. It shaped much of the architecture of Apple’s software ecosystem. Since 2014, Swift has largely taken over for new development, but Objective-C remains important for maintaining existing codebases and interoperates closely with Swift so both languages can be used together in many projects.
