TheBrain 15.0.637 *
New Features
✦ Quick Thoughts < MZ Review: Are quick thoughts searchable?
- Jot something down the moment it occurs to you without first deciding which brain or thought it belongs to; every quick thought lands in one inbox for your account, shared across all your devices
- Capture inside or outside TheBrain: the Quick Thoughts button in the toolbar (Ctrl+Alt+N, Cmd+Option+N on Mac), a browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, a global shortcut and tray icon in the desktop app, and widgets, tiles and shortcuts on iOS and Android
- Write with the full notes editor, including formatting, images and web links; the browser extension can add the page you are on as a link
- File each note into any of your brains as a new child thought, added to a thought's notes, or attached as a Markdown file; its links become web link attachments on the thought
- Capturing works offline; notes are sent when you are back online
✦ Note Versions < MZ Review
- Browse a note's earlier versions, with who edited each one and when, and copy text from any of them back into the note
- Show changes marks what was added and removed, compared with the version before or the current note; step through the changes one by one
- Open it with the clock button at the right of the notes status bar, from the notes context menu, or from the thought properties "..." menu
- Desktop: The versions open in a window of their own, which you can keep beside the note while you copy from it
✦ Desktop < MZ Review
- Dialogs in windows of their own
- Many dialogs, including Settings, Reminders, Sync Status, Quick Thoughts and BrainBox, now open in their own windows, which you can place outside the main window; some can be resized or left open while you keep working
✦ Undo works across syncs < MZ Review
- Syncing no longer clears the undo history, so you can undo and redo your changes after a sync
- If something you are undoing was changed since, on another device or here, you are asked first; the dialog lists what changed and what Undo Anyway does with each item
- Undo Anyway on a note or file that was changed since keeps the current version beside it as a conflict copy
✦ Edits from multiple devices are merged
- When the same note is edited on two devices before they sync, the changes from both are combined in the note
- Changes made to different sections of a note are merged automatically with no user intervention needed
- Where both devices changed the same lines, the note shows each version in a "conflict" callout; keep the one you want and delete the other
- Both versions a merged note was made from are kept in Note Versions, so you can copy from either one
- When any other file is edited on two devices before they sync, the later edit wins and the other version is kept beside it as "[Conflict] name (who, when).ext", so no work is lost
- A file renamed on one device while its contents were edited on another is kept under both names, with the contents each device had
- Conflict callouts and conflict copies name the person who made each version
✦ When linking or creating thoughts, pressing Arrow-down then Enter right after typing now picks the first matching thought once the results appear, instead of creating a new one < MZ Review
✦ When linking several existing thoughts at once, the search text is cleared after each pick while the results stay listed, so you can pick another match or type a new search right away < MZ Review
✦ In search results, each section now has a "..." menu with Add Results to Selection and Remove Results from Selection for that section; the commands can be bound in Keyboard settings < MZ Review
✦ Added "Split URL titles into name and label" to General settings; turn it off to keep the whole page title as the thought name when creating a thought from a web address
✦ Highlight can now be given a keyboard shortcut in Keyboard settings, and it appears in the Format Text menu
✦ The menu shown for a thought link in notes now includes Convert to Embedded Note < MZ Review
✦ The Select Related Thoughts dialog now remembers its options, and they sync across your devices < MZ Review
✓ Fixes and Improvements
↑ Sync and collaboration fixes
- Auto-sync no longer pauses after AI makes changes since undo continues to be functional after a sync < MZ Review
- When another sync of the same brain is in progress, the sync notification now shows "Waiting for another sync of this brain to finish..."
- Fixed: When a thought was changed on two devices between syncs, each device could keep its own version instead of the latest
- Fixed: A note written on two devices before they synced could show different text on each device until it was edited again
- Fixed: When several people wrote the first note on the same thought and synced at about the same time, only the newest text was kept; the notes are now merged
- Fixed: When two people edited the same file and synced at about the same time, only the later edit was kept, with no conflict copy
- Fixed: Attaching files with the same name on two devices left them sharing one file after syncing; the later one is now named "name (1).ext"
- Fixed: A file renamed on another device left a copy under its old name in the thought's folder
- Fixed: When a thought type was deleted on one device and changed on another, its thoughts lost the inherited label and icon after syncing
- Fixed: A thought deleted on one device and changed on another came back after syncing without its links, attachments or field values
- Fixed: Changes made in the built-in text editor, and changed thought or brain icons, sometimes did not sync to other devices
- Fixed: Undoing the creation of a calendar event left the event on other devices
- Fixed: A sync could stay stuck on "Preparing logs…" or "Processing data remotely" when the sync service restarted during it
↑ Deleting an attachment can now be undone on all platforms including web
↑ Thought history now records each undo and redo as its own entry < MZ Review
✓ Fixed: An undo or redo that failed part-way showed no message
↑ Desktop - The Local API address is now http://localhost:11522/api/ instead of port 8001, so the app no longer occupies ports 8000 and 8001 used by many development tools; update any scripts that use the old address (Settings > Local API Key shows the current one)
✓ Desktop - Fixed: After an update installed on quit, the app could offer to restart for the same update again
↑ Thought names created by AI now keep their casing instead of being auto-capitalized
↑ AI chat messages about undo, redo and responses that were cut short are now translated
↑ Right-to-left text in the thought name, label and aliases fields is now right-aligned automatically, and the share and swap name/label buttons move to the left of right-to-left text
✓ Fixed: Deleting a thought or link left its field values behind
✓ Fixed: Whether a thought created by pasting a file or folder became active followed the "Auto-capitalize" setting instead of "Activate last created thought"
✓ Fixed: In the Properties dialog, Enter in the name or label field moved to the next field instead of closing the dialog
✓ Fixed: Double-clicking a link opened its properties dialog at the top of the plex instead of near the link
✓ Fixed: After creating a thought from a child that was not the active thought, the plex could stay on the parent while the notes showed the new thought
✓ Fixed: Converting a thought to a tag or type could hang or crash on very deep hierarchies, and could wrongly turn its parent tags into jumps
↑ While dragging a link from a gate, the thought under the pointer is outlined again so you can see where the link will go < MZ Review
✓ Fixed: The plex column width and thought spacing reset to their defaults when a tab was reopened or the app restarted
✓ Fixed: The footnote hover preview in notes appeared too low when the note was zoomed < MZ Review
✓ Fixed: In notes, using "Link" on a multi-word mention that spellcheck marked as misspelled linked only part of it
✓ Fixed: In the plain text editor, actions that transform the selected text applied from the beginning of the text instead of the selection
✓ Fixed: A note containing certain malformed thought links showed "Note Save Failed" even though it was saved
✓ Fixed: Previewing a text file could show "Unknown error" instead of its contents
✓ Fixed: Text file previews sometimes failed to load
✓ Fixed: After a text attachment was edited, its tile kept showing the old file size
↑ Close Tab and Close Window now close the frontmost dialog instead of the tab or window behind it
✓ Fixed: Pressing Escape in Rename Brain also closed the Settings dialog beneath it
✓ Fixed: Escape could stop closing dialogs until the app was restarted
✓ Fixed: Changes made in Settings sometimes did not show right away or did not reach other open tabs and windows
↑ Right-clicking or long-pressing a tag below the plex now opens the tag menu, as it does in the plex
↑ Replacing or removing a tag now shows in the tags section right away < MZ Review
↑ The search field now has keyboard focus when a thought picker opens, such as when choosing where to file a quick thought
✓ Fixed: In the tree view, a thought with many children showed only about the first 200 of them
↑ Thought history is easier to read in narrow windows and on phones
↑ Desktop: The window toolbar now includes Undo and Redo by default, after Back and Forward < < MZ Review
↑ Undoing the filing of a BrainBox item now puts it back in BrainBox
↑ Copy, Copy File Path and Show Properties now work on BrainBox items

✓ Fixed: After a brain's icon was changed, its thumbnail in the brains list sometimes did not update
✓ Fixed: In the Report menu, the Legacy Saved Reports button appeared without a background
✓ Fixed: While signed in, deleting, renaming or changing the icon of a local-only brain did not update the brains list
✓ Fixed: Opening a brain archive file could import it into the open brain without asking, and an archive opened at app launch was sometimes not imported
✓ Fixed: Opening a brain could fail with "Could not find item with ID" when an older copy of the brain was also registered on the computer
✓ Fixed: The subscription management dialog failed to open for users holding a seat in a license group whose owner account had been deleted
↑ The TeamBrain management page is much faster for organizations with many members
↑ Linux - The eyedropper in the color picker now works on Wayland desktops
✓ Desktop - Fixed: Problems resuming from sleep
✓ Desktop - Fixed: Quitting could leave the app running with no windows and only its menu bar showing
✓ Desktop - Fixed: If the app's background process crashed, windows could stay empty and frozen instead of the app quitting
✓ Desktop - Fixed: A new window could open in the wrong light or dark theme
✓ Desktop - Fixed: A brain link that opened in a tab not yet shown since launch opened the tab on its last thought instead of the linked thought
