IMMERSIVE, DOCUMENTARY & PARTICIPATORY SPECTATORSHIP
Immersive, Documentary & Participatory Spectatorship
Movement question
This movement traces the spectator’s transformation from recipient to navigator, witness, decision-maker, participant and potential political agent.
Participation is not automatically emancipatory. The movement holds open participation ↔ manipulation, agency ↔ pre-designed choice, and immersion ↔ control.
Primary Guest Artist practices
- Punchdrunk / Maxine Doyle: immersive space, audience movement, multiple paths, environmental storytelling, discovery, choice and partial knowledge.
- Rimini Protokoll: documentary performance, real systems, testimony, experts of the everyday, non-actor presence and participatory structures.
- Julian Boal: Theatre of the Oppressed, spect-actor, intervention, social conflict, rehearsal for action and collective analysis.
The spectator is never simply outside the work, but participation always has conditions. The central ethical question is who designs those conditions and whether the participant can meaningfully refuse or alter them.
