MAXINE DOYLE
Maxine Doyle / Punchdrunk
A. Encounter / lineage
The Punchdrunk / Maxine Doyle encounter transmits immersive dramaturgy in which the audience moves through an environment rather than receiving a work from one fixed frontal position.
B. Protocol & practices
The protocol works with immersive space, audience movement, multiple possible paths, environmental storytelling, discovery, choice and partial knowledge. Spectators construct an experience through where they move, what they encounter, whom they follow and what they miss.
C. What the practice trains
The spectator becomes a navigator whose attention is physically situated. The work distributes narrative across space, so no one participant receives the whole structure. Missing material is not an accidental deficiency; it is structurally part of spectatorship. Choice becomes a compositional mechanism, but choices remain shaped by architecture, invitation and design.
D. What remains artistically important
The technique worth preserving is environmental dramaturgy: narrative can be encountered through route, proximity, atmosphere, fragment and discovery rather than only through exposition. The spectator’s body becomes part of the temporal and spatial composition.
E. Productive tension / resistance
Immersion can produce agency while also manipulating movement, attention and expectation. Multiple paths do not guarantee equal freedom if the environment privileges some routes or hides the conditions of choice. The audience should not be confused with an autonomous co-author when the system has already designed its permissions.
F. Indirect historical links
Jump Link to Photography, Cinema & the Framed Body: the spectator leaves the fixed frontal frame and enters a spatially distributed narrative environment. This is a conceptual relation, not a claim of direct influence.
