DREAM LOGIC

DREAM LOGIC

DEFINITION

Dream Logic describes a mode of organisation in which events follow affective, associative, mnemonic or psychic relations rather than ordinary linear causality. Time may repeat, identities may shift, objects may substitute for one another and spatial continuity may break without the work treating these disruptions as errors. The term should not be applied to every nonlinear or ambiguous film.

GENERATOR / ORIGIN

MY ANALYTICAL TERM. The primary generators in this Brain are Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon and David Lynch's cinema. The expression has wider critical usage; no single author is claimed as its inventor. Tarkovsky and Apichatpong offer related but distinct temporal/material and collective-memory operations.

GENEALOGY

Linear narrative causality → modernist subjective cinema → dream as associative structure → porous reality and fractured identity → collective/historical dream fields. Deren constructs dream logic through editing and recurrence; Lynch through doubling, sound and narrative rupture; Apichatpong expands the dream beyond the sealed individual.

WHY IT MATTERS HERE

Dream Logic is retained as a cross-branch hub because it helps distinguish psychic organisation from generic nonlinearity. It connects Deren, Lynch, Apichatpong, repetition, doubling and the Brain's own dream-work without requiring fixed symbolic decoding.
