PRESENCE ↔ DISSOCIATION / SUPPRESSION ↔ ACCEPTANCE

ENDURANCE IS NOT ONE MECHANISM

A person may continue through pain via attentional control, acceptance, reappraisal, interoceptive discrimination, goal focus, social support, ritual meaning, dissociation, or suppression. These are not equivalent.

Presence ↔ dissociation.

Suppression ↔ acceptance.

Suppression attempts to eliminate, ignore, fight, or conceal sensation. Acceptance / non-reactivity allows sensation to be perceived without automatically acting on it. Neither is universally superior in every context.

Pain expertise may require attentional flexibility: attending, distancing, reappraising, acting, and stopping.

The expert body does not endure everything. It may know when to continue and when to stop.

The relation to Marina Abramović—duration, voluntary ordeal, attention, stillness, breath, ritual, witness—and Gina Pane—pain, action, body, mediation, witness—is conceptual. Do not diagnose either artist or infer a neural mechanism from the artwork.

Removal audit: without this distinction, performance endurance would be confused with presence, suppression, dissociation, or acceptance.
