MATERIAL POOL / VARIATIONS / SELECTION
GETTING LOST IN POSSIBILITY
A participant describes losing the original impulse through repeated variations, too many possibilities, uncertainty, inability to end and distance from initial intention.
EDDIE’S RESPONSE
The documentation records Eddie describing this as normal choreographic experience. Trying several possibilities produces A POOL OF MATERIAL.
SELECTION
Later, the artist chooses through decision, limitation, commitment and acceptance that another possibility will not be used.
TIME
A deadline can force a decision without guaranteeing correctness.
COMMITMENT
The artist need not discover the universally right version; they choose the version to develop.
AUDIENCE QUESTION
Does the audience need to understand exactly what I am trying to achieve? If not, explanatory material may be removed.
