RON ATHEY
Ron Athey
Stigmatized body → ritualized body
In the AIDS crisis, bodily fluids were coded as danger and the queer body imagined as contaminating or threatening. Athey brings blood, skin, wound and ritualized action into public performance without reducing the work to scientific evidence for pain tolerance or sensational spectacle.
Contamination panic names the social field around the performance. The body marked dangerous becomes agent, ceremonial body, image and community site.
Pain is not private sensation only: it becomes public sign, ritual structure and witnessed event. Connect to pain, endurance, witness and ritual while preserving the historical differences from Gina Pane and Marina Abramović.
Question: What happens when a body society marks as dangerous makes itself unavoidably present?
