DZIGA VERTOV

Dziga Vertov — Kino-Eye

Vertov does not simply use a camera to document industrial modernity. The camera becomes part of a new perceptual system.

Human eye → camera eye → Kino-Eye. The camera can move, accelerate, slow, magnify, repeat, cut and recombine. The machine does not simply record human perception; it produces forms of perception the unaided eye cannot produce.

Man with a Movie Camera assembles body, camera, factory, transport, city, machine and montage. The city becomes a rhythmic system: montage synchronizes human gestures and mechanical processes, producing a cinematic organism of human body + machine + city.

Connections to Benjamin, Rodchenko, Farocki and Photography, Cinema & the Framed Body concern machine perception and constructed vision. They are conceptual links, not a claim that Vertov simply illustrates those thinkers.
