DAY 3 — GROUP AS FORCE, TRANSFORMATION & WRONG REACTION
PROTOCOL — DAY 3
DATE
19 March 2025
REVIEW OF FIRST ÉTUDES
The group presented work involving the whole ensemble, smaller groups or a soloist altered by group presence.
ÉTUDE 2 — ACTION DISRUPTED
One performer begins a simple action; a group enters and performs a separate action without directly explaining itself; the group passes and exits; the original performer can no longer continue as before.
GROUP AS IMPERSONAL FORCE
The group could function as weather, pressure, memory, fate, social force, passing image or unexplained disturbance. It need not behave as several separate characters.
A → B
The soloist required a visible change, such as eating → refusing food, singing → losing the voice, moving → becoming still, pursuing → freezing, innocence → predation or openness → withdrawal. These are protocol examples, not formulas.
WRONG REACTION
A wrong reaction deviates from established expectation. The structure requires a recognisable event, expected response, different response and perceivable consequence.
EMOTIONAL LOGIC
A performance need not make complete narrative sense, but should make emotional or perceptual sense.
BEGINNING / MIDDLE / END
The concise protocol specifies a beginning, middle and end without requiring conventional storytelling; it requires perceivable progression.
PHYSICAL PREPARATION
The process shifted toward duet choreography, lifts, contact partnering, two physical phrases and duet/trio structures.
