AUDIENCE / OPEN MEANING
AUDIENCE / OPEN MEANING
OVER-EXPLANATION
The artist may try to give complete story, correct meaning, emotional conclusion or explicit interpretation. The workshop questions whether this is necessary.
SPACE FOR THE AUDIENCE
When everything is explained, space for recognition, association, memory, interpretation, feeling and disagreement may close.
QUESTION RATHER THAN ANSWER
A quotation attributed in the workshop to Robert Wilson says the artist’s role is to ask questions rather than declare what things are.
ATTRIBUTED IN WORKSHOP SOURCE — NOT INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED.
DIALOGUE / NOT A LECTURE
An open question creates dialogue among performer, material and audience. The work need not lecture; it can construct a situation in which another person encounters something.
