WORKSHOP PRACTICE
LLOYD NEWSON — CPPM WORKSHOP PRACTICE
CHRONOLOGY STATUS
Exact workshop dates have not been verified in the accessible sources.
Clarisse’s Weekly Question positions Lloyd Newson’s workshop at the end of Term 1.
Do not infer exact dates from the surrounding Guest Artist schedule.
Do not create a daily chronology.
DOCUMENTATION STATUS
The available material is fragmentary. It records selected exercises, core instructions, earlier group-map categories, Clarisse’s subsequent analysis and references to DV8 productions. It does not constitute a complete workshop protocol.
OVERALL FIELD
The documented practice investigated relations between:
- body;
- voice;
- movement;
- language;
- rhythm;
- space;
- physical metaphor;
- testimony;
- political content;
- audience attention.
CENTRAL DISTINCTION
The body and voice were not required to form one unified expressive channel.
Instead, the work explored their independence, tension, interruption, contradiction and simultaneous presence.
CENTRAL WORKSHOP INSTRUCTION
WORKSHOP INSTRUCTION — RECORDED BY CLARISSE:
“Don’t let your voice be affected by your movement.”
A second CPPM source reverses the direction of this instruction.
Preserve both versions under:
SOURCE DISCREPANCY.
The common principle is not total separation in every circumstance. It is resistance to automatic illustration.
The body should not merely illustrate the words. The voice should not merely imitate the body’s physical effort.
DOCUMENTARY ORIENTATION
DV8’s wider practice connects movement with interviews, testimony, researched facts, personal histories, political argument and archive material. Official production contexts confirm this for Can We Talk About This? and JOHN.
Do not imply that every CPPM exercise used documentary testimony.
FORM / CONTENT
Physical form was not treated as politically neutral. Movement could carry social positioning, conflict, power, vulnerability, violence, desire and resistance. Words could introduce information that movement alone could not communicate precisely.
CORE TENSIONS
VOICE / BODY
FACT / SPECTACLE
TESTIMONY / CHOREOGRAPHY
FORM / POLITICAL CONTENT
ACTIVISM / MORAL PARALYSIS
SAFE WORK / CONTROVERSY.
SOURCE STATUS
The workshop sources were written by CPPM participants. They combine memory, observation, interpretation and later theoretical analysis. They are not an official Lloyd Newson teaching manual.
