TEHCHING HSIEH

Tehching Hsieh

In Time Clock Piece / One Year Performance 1980–1981, Hsieh removes industrial clock discipline from the factory and extends it across the entirety of lived time.

Industrial modernity organizes activity through clock, shift, punctuality, repetition and measurement. Every hour, for one year, the performer punches a clock, makes a photograph, returns and repeats. Sleep is interrupted; the body and life are reorganized by the schedule.

Clock → schedule → repetition → sleep disruption → body → life.

The crucial transformation is:

INDUSTRIAL TIME OUTSIDE THE BODY → INDUSTRIAL TIME ORGANIZING THE BODY’S ENTIRE LIFE.

The machine need not physically penetrate the flesh: time itself can function as an apparatus. Time enters the body. Duration is not merely length; duration becomes discipline.

Hsieh differs from Abramović: Hsieh foregrounds system, protocol and life-time, while Abramović foregrounds presence, limit and endurance. Jump connections to Taylor, Abramović, duration, endurance, repetition and performance preserve these differences.
