NIH Pulls Plug on AIM-High Trial with Niacin

<p>Jul 13, 2011 06:21 PM

&#160;

trial was halted 18 months early &#160;cuz NIACIN showed NO benefit!!!

&#160;

and small unexplained incr in ischemic stroke in the Niacin group.

&#160;

some commentators thot it was the NAIL in the coffin for treating new lipid markers of CV risk, eg

TG or HDL.

&#160;

Also listen to the video by Howard Weintraub... 9 mins... quite good...

&#160;

He says, if ur LDL is abt 70 or so... the job is DONE!... There is nothing for HDL to do.

(but may be a difft story for pts with LDL of 110 eg).

&#160;

He also notes that postmenopausal women (with high BP and glucos intol etc) &#160;have high &#160;

atheroscleros &#160;despite high HDL &#160;and &#160;higher HDLs may be correlated &#160;with MORE atheroscler

(he says its possible that their HDLs may be smaller, denser &#160;? less capable of transport)

&#160;

My bottom line for me: &#160;&#160;get &#160;LDL as low as possible.

&#160;
