On Wisdom Nicholas Gordon

Jul 29, 2009 10:01 PM There is a lot that's good here; about 60% of it.

6. Wisdom is not what is wise, but that by which it is wise; not what should be done, but why it should be done; not the answer, but the explanation.
... so, he sees it as a mental faculty like conscience

NIcholas uses the term Universality to mean that Wisdom is always the same and the same thruout time.
I'm suspicious of that.

1. Religions are the raiments of wisdom.

Secularization: Nick Gordon in this section seems to feel that there are not or poss. cannot be secular substitutes for religion
as a purveyor of wisdom. I disagree with that ... look at the PPI training at Kaiser or the volume Positive Psychology or the
entire movement for integrity in business. I can discuss the role of values in a secular society ... they are not a formal part of science except
that they can empirically studied by psychologists.

Why can't morality be taught in schools. Its a shame that morality, ethics, wisdom are the exclusive province of religion - that puts them
formally off limits to schools and business in the USA.

His section on freedom indicates that he does not understand it. It is gobbledy-gook.

WISDOM attributes;
from Nicholas Gordan Website

Basis in Human Nature:
engraved in the heart - heart based.

Wisdom enables us to live with one another.

If experience were food, wisdom would be taste, enabling us to distinguish good from bad. And although all are endowed with taste, the education of taste enables one to make subtler distinctions and finer judgments.

We are born with a taste for beauty and goodness, finding in them our deepest and most lasting pleasure.

GOAL OF HAPPINESS

1) Happiness is the state of deep and lasting pleasure.
(do not confuse with transitory pleasures; true happiness is far more stable and certain.

Happiness is part of the same landscape as pain: therefore, happiness is not the same thing as pain avoidance.

The deepest and most lasting pleasure is derived from the act of being - and is available at all times.

Similarly with wisdom: the principles are inborn, but their application is much enhanced by upbringing, schooling, reading, conversation, the cultivation of good habits, and the emulation of the wise.
