Note:  Steve  first came to MIT in Sept 1967 and I took his v first class on Math Learning Theory
based on his just published paper!!!  He came up for tenure in 1975 and was turned down by MIT see below,
then BU hired him at John Silber's suggestion (he was Pres of BU) and was turned down by BU by his
dept chair in 1977 and that was over-ruled by John Silber later that year.  see videos below.... part 4.

excellent. obvious that Jeff's theory came from Steve Grossberg.

I have on my computer a file Grossberg Vision 2005 that contains 250 slides of Steve's.
Part 1 is very tough going on explaining optical illusions.
Part 2 is much easier.  <b> Laminar Computing</b> .

Laminar Computing is a synthesis of
Bottom-up Adaptive Filtering
Horizontal associative grouping and
top-Down hypothesis testing and attention
in ALL of its PROCESSING STAGES.

Jul 11, 2010 7:50 PM   Many part YouTube Videos Celebrating Steve's  65th birthday (in 2005).  born in 1940.

Francis the Talking the Mule.   Steve started in BU math dept... came here from MIT bruised and battered.
did not get tenure.   letter to BU dated Jan 1977... criticising ? at BU for not supporting his tenure bid
at MIT.  Elsie:  R they crazy?  If they like u so much why don't they take you.  (age 27).

<b>JOHN SILBER</b>  President of BU who invited Steve to come to BU reversed the Jack Ass liberal arts dean who
denied Steve tenure.  "<b>a transforming event in hx of BU</b> was the appt and tenure of Steve Grossberg!!!!"
quote from JOHN SILBER.  math was far from cutting edge.  Ken Hoffman was chairman on math at MIT...
each yr they alternated btwn pure and applied math at MIT...  Ken cud not promote Steve at MIT;
"Steve's aim was to solve the mind/body problem"  John Silber is a philosopher.
John Silber accepted him onto BU faculty from MIT in 1975...  evolution of models...
