Ubiquitin

May 05, 2015 09:31 PM

note: Nobel Prize in 2004 (split 3 ways) for
the discov of Ub-mediated protein degradation (see Protein QC Symposium at Stfd today).

UB = Ubiquitin is a small (8,500 dalton) regulatory protein ; found in almost all tissues
(ubiquitously) of eukarytoic orgs.

produced by 4 genes in human genome.

Ubiquitination is a post-translational mod.

it can signal for their degradation via the proteasome;
alter their cellular location affect their activity
and promote or prevent protein interactions.

results of cascade is that Ub binds to lysine residues.

only poly-ubiqu on defined lysines mostly K48 and K29 leads to degradation with the proteasome...
the molecular kiss of death!!!
