cover story in July 2017 Sci American on Memory (and CREB)

Key idea: (mouse expts);

CREB gene when up regulated, increases production of CREB protein which
regulates several other genes, which in turn,
spur the making of ion channels that make that neuron more excitable.

Those particular neurons that are excited during an experience are more apt to
have synapses strengthened (a la Hebbs rule).

Key expt: mice exposed to two different cages within 5 hours on the same day
will link those cages in memory... so they will freeze in the 2nd cage... even tho
they did not get a foot shock there but only in the first cage.
This does NOT happen when the experiences in the two different cages are separated by 7 days.

elaborate controls using optogenetics and DREDD.
