by John Hesselink, MD, FACR exclt discussion of anatomy on limbic structures.

THREE C-shaped structures...

one of the most primitive parts of the brain phylogenetically.

Central role in memory, learning, emotion, and autonomic activity.

OUTER ARC of the limbic system: (these are the CORTICAL AREAS):

(going clockwise from the front at 9 pm) the subcallosal area, the cingulate gyrus and

the paraHC gyrus including the uncus and subiculum.

The subcallosal areas includes the SEPTAL NUCLEI (remember Olds and Milner expts: the PLEASURE center).

the Septal nuclei are connected to everything around them including the subst nigra, the amygdala, the hypothal.

MIDDLE ARC is paraterminal gyrus, induseum griseum (just above the Corpus callosum) and the HC.

The indus gris merges with the tail of the HC.

INNER ARC: Mammilary bodies, Fornix, fimbria. and HC.

This is one of the major outflow tracts of the HC... HC to fimbria to fornix to mammilary bodies to

mammilothalamic tract to thalamus to cingulate gyrus.

Also see his diagram of the HC.
