This was hard to find.

The Optimal Height of the Synaptic Cleft  Savtchenko and Rusakov  2006 enclosed link.

All  synaptic clefts have a height of about 15 to 25 nm ... call it 20 nm = 200 Angst.
This is determined by the synaptic cleft proteins (prob that create and hold the apposition).
That apposition is firmly in place and resists even the disruption required to make synaptosomes.

This paper is about the huge variance (in contrast to the height) of the WIDTH of synapses...
ie their  contact area varies considerably (form synapse to synapse, not over time).
