During the first, second, and third centuries, numerous Gospels were in circulation. However, when the Christian Church received official endorsement from the Roman Empire in the 4th century, a decision was made to include only four of these Gospels in the Canon that would form the New Testament of the Bible. These Gospels are known as Mark, John, Luke, and Matthew. A pertinent question arises: how can we distinguish between them when observing depictions of the four evangelists, such as in this relief sculpture or in a stained glass window?
