Deep-link
A deep-link is a specialized URL or hyperlink that bypasses a website or app's standard homepage or main menu to send you directly to a specific piece of content, page, or internal location within that application.
How It Works: Standard Link vs. Deep-Link
- Standard Link: Takes you to the front door of an app or website (e.g., opening a browser to
thebrain.comor launching TheBrain app to whatever thought you happened to look at last).
- Deep-Link: Takes you straight to a specific room or item inside (e.g., a specific thought node, a exact timestamp in a YouTube video, or a particular document inside a note-taking app).
Common Examples
- Product Pages: A link in an email that takes you directly to a specific pair of shoes inside the Amazon app, rather than just opening the Amazon home screen.
- Knowledge Bases: A link in a task manager that opens a specific note or project board in UpNote or Notion.
- Database Navigation: In software like TheBrain, a deep-link (
brain://...) commands the software to instantly jump the Plex focus directly to a targeted thought, no matter how deeply buried it is in your network of data.
Why They Are Useful
- Saves Time: Eliminates the need to manually search, click through menus, or dig through nested folders to find a specific item.
- Contextual Sharing: Allows you to point someone else (or your future self) directly to the exact piece of information you are referencing.
