Dirk Muench
Notes
From a purely speculative gut feeling, I have come to distrust his narrative. He always positioned himself as "a Wall Street guy" and claimed that he got back in touch and joined South Pole in 2021. However, he was active in similar spaces and domains as South Pole for almost all of his history. The companies he founded were having meetings, partnerships, and other interactions with South Pole spanning decades.
In fact, before he joined South Pole, his company Persistent was already using Kariba for their offsetting. Finally, while he was always responsive when he contacted me, he completely stopped answering after I asked him why I found ERPAs showing South Pole owning at least one bank account in Mauritius and that they were transferring funds between entities that Dirk has a pretty close connection to, by way of E+CO and Erik Wurster.

- Relevance: Friendship with Renat Heuberger and Patrick Bürgi from ETH Zurich. Wall Street trader before joining South Pole. Developed concerns about the Kariba REDD+ project, closely involved in executing financial due diligence.
- Expertise: Expert on traditional finance and trading, with some understanding of climate finance and markets. Does not seem to know that Emission Trading Systems (Compliance Market) also include various types of Emission Reduction Certificates, generated by Sustainable Projects, and expressed doubt that South Pole has a history of acting as a broker of Emissions Allowances between traders on the European Union’s Emission Trading System (EU ETS).
