Verra
Overview
Verra is a non-profit organization that develops and manages standards in environmental and social markets. It operates the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, the world’s largest voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) crediting program, as well as other standards (e.g., CCB, SD VISta, plastic and landscape standards).
Verified Carbon Standard (VCS)
- The VCS Program certifies emission reductions and removals from projects across sectors such as AFOLU, renewable energy, industry, transport and waste.
- Originated as the Voluntary Carbon Standard and later rebranded as the Verified Carbon Standard under Verra.
- As of mid‑2020s, thousands of projects registered and over a billion credits issued, making it the dominant registry in the voluntary carbon market.
Governance & Market Role
- Headquartered in Washington, DC with global staff.
- Sets methodologies, rules and procedures for baselines, additionality, monitoring, reporting, and verification of projects.
- Its credits (VCUs) are widely used by corporates, financial institutions and initiatives such as CORSIA.
Integrity Debates and Reforms
- Subject to significant scrutiny and criticism, particularly over forest-based REDD+ methodologies and alleged over-crediting in some projects.
- In response, Verra has launched methodology reviews, governance reforms and updates to the VCS Program, and is engaging with emerging integrity initiatives like the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (IC‑VCM).
Relevance to this Brain
- Along with Gold Standard, one of the central standards/registries that underpin the current voluntary carbon market.
- Many projects and intermediaries in this brain (e.g., South Pole and other retailers/platforms) rely heavily on Verra-certified credits.
- Critical node for analysing how standards shape integrity, supply, and pricing in voluntary carbon markets.
