3 Link Options
I recommend experimenting with editing the properties of your links to help with locating and more effectively utilizing the information in your brain. Labels and color can be added to links and the link thickness can also be changed.
In addition, you can create link types that can be reused. I have several link types that I use and rely on quite frequently. Directional and One-Way links also provide enhanced functionality and plex management in the desktop.
Link Colors
- I have one specific unlabeled colored link that means (to me) KEEP this connection. This link is extremely helpful in situations where I might not remember why the link was created in the first place, and it encourages me to take a closer look at the thought relationship.
- I have an unlabeled bright white link I use to highlight important thought relationships
Link Labels
- I regularly use the following labeled links:
- COMPARE
- TO DO
- TEMP
- I also use another labeled link (NOTE) to indicate when a note has been added into a link -- and another link labeled with an asterisk (*) to indicate when an attachment has been added into a link. For example, I often store original images in links in my public and shared brains since this keeps the originals out of sight, but available in case I need to access them again in the future.
- Link labels are also helpful for process mapping. Thanks, Matt, for the great tip!
- Yes links will take you in one direction
- No links will take you in another
Directional & One-Way Links
Directional links and one-way links can be extremely helpful, especially in public and shared brains:
- Directional links can provide sequenced navigation between thoughts in the brain, for example when creating a tour or a sequential learning pathway, as illustrated with the NEXT step link label in the adjacent plex. For additional details, see Note (below) along with the 2 attached screenshots of the directional link display in the desktop (above).
- Combined with labels, directional links can also indicate the nature of a thought relationship. For example: "Married to", "Supervisor of", "Derived from", etc.
- When used strategically, one-way links help immensely in creating strategic connections between thoughts while reducing visual congestion and distractions the plex.
Note:
- Directional links are currently available in the desktop and webbrain versions of TheBrain 8. However, they are only available in desktop brains on TheBrain's new platform.
- One-way links are only available in the desktop on both platforms.
