Hebrews 4

TEXT

written to Jewish Christians who were enduring persecution and were tempted to revert back to their former Jewish faith

We may fear, then //therefore because we see some were not able to enter in because of lack of trust/unbelief (Hebrews 3:19//,

lest a promise being left of entering into His rest,

any one of you may seem to have come short,

for we also are having good news proclaimed,

even as they //those who Moses led out of Egypt but did not enter the promised land because of disobedience and unbelief.//,

but the word heard //the message from YHWH//

did not profit them,

not being mixed with faith

in those who heard,

for we do enter into the rest

-- we who did believe,

as He said, //Psalms 95 :11//

`So I sware in My anger,

If they //people whose hearts go astray,

and do not known my ways. // shall enter into My rest //They shall never enter my rest// -- ;'

and yet the works were done

from the foundation of the world,

for He spake in a certain place

concerning the seventh [day] thus: `

And God did rest

in the seventh day

from all His works;'

and in this [place] again,

`If they shall enter into My rest -- ;'

^6 ^since then, it remaineth for certain to enter into it, and those who did first hear good news entered not in because of unbelief --

^7 ^again He doth limit a certain day, To-day,' (in David saying, after so long a time,) as it hath been said, To-day, if His voice ye may hear, ye may not harden your hearts,'

^8 ^for if Joshua had given them rest, He would not concerning another day have spoken after these things;

^9 ^there doth remain, then, a sabbatic rest to the people of God,

^10 ^for he who did enter into his rest, he also rested from his works, as God from His own.

^11 ^May we be diligent, then, to enter into that rest, that no one in the same example of the unbelief may fall,

^12 ^for the reckoning of God is living, and working, and sharp above every two-edged sword, and piercing unto the dividing asunder both of soul and spirit, of joints also and marrow, and a discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart;

^13 ^and there is not a created thing not manifest before Him, but all things [are] naked and open to His eyes -- with whom is our reckoning.

^14 ^Having, then, a great chief priest passed through the heavens -- Jesus the Son of God -- may we hold fast the profession,

^15 ^for we have not a chief priest unable to sympathise with our infirmities, but [one] tempted in all things in like manner -- apart from sin;

^16 ^we may come near, then, with freedom, to the throne of the grace, that we may receive kindness, and find grace -- for seasonable help.

TLV VERSION

Hebrews 3:19 So we see that they were not able to enter in because of lack of trust.

Let us fear then! //because not all who were called out of Egypt entered the promised land//

Though a promise of entering His rest is left open,

some of you would seem to have fallen short.

For we also have had Good News proclaimed to us //holy brothers and systers who share in the heavenly calling//,

just as they did. //those who were not able to enter because of lack of trust//

But the word they heard did not help them,

because they were not unified with those who listened in faith.

For we who have trusted are entering into that rest. It is just as God has said,

“So in My wrath I swore, ‘They shall never enter My rest,’” //Psalms 95:11, Exodus 17, Deuteronomy 1//

even though His works were finished since the foundation of the world.

Ephesians 1:4 - he chose use before the foundation of the world
1 Peter 1:20 - He was chosen before the foundation of the world
Revelation 13:8/ Revelation 17:8- all who dwell on the earth - everyone whose name has been written from the foundation of the world in the Book of the Life of the Lamb who was slain.

For somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this way:

“And God rested on the seventh day from all His works,” //Genesis 2:2 Sabbath//

and again in this passage: “They shall never enter My rest.” //Psalms 95//

So then //because a promise of entering his rest is left open//

it remains for some to enter into it;

yet those who formerly had Good News proclaimed to them

did not enter because of disobedience.

Again, God appoints a certain day

—“Today”—saying through David after so long a time, just as it has been said before,

“Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” //Psalms 95//

Hebrews 3:7, 15 - do not have a heart of unbelief, do not be hardened by deceitfulness of sin, do not rebell

For if Joshua had given them rest, //in entering the promised land//

God would not have spoken of another day later on.

So //because Joshua did not give them rest// there remains a Shabbat rest

for the people of God.

For the one who has entered God’s rest

has also ceased from his own work,

just as God did from His.

Genesis 2:2 - on the seventh day, ceased from all his work that he made
Genesis 2:3 - on the seventh day, ceased from all his work that God created for the purpose of preparing
Exodus 31:17 - Sabbath day - a sign between Me and Benei-Yisrael forever, seventh day ceased from work and rested

Let us, //holy brothers and systers who share in the heavenly calling//, therefore, //because a promise of entering his rest is left open//

make every effort to enter that rest, //cease from our own work//

so that no one may fall through the same pattern of disobedience. //as those called out of Egypt//

For the word of God

is living

and active

and sharper than any two-edged sword

piercing right through to a separation

of soul and spirit,

joints and marrow,

and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

No creature is hidden from Him,

but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him

to whom we must give account.

Matthew 15:6 - Jesus said, on account of your tradition you made void the word of God
Mark 7:13 - Jesus said making void the word of God with your tradition that you’ve ahnded down, and you do many such things.
Luke 8:11 - Now the parable is this: the seed is the word of God
Luke 8:21 - Jesus said My mothers and brothers are these who are hearing the word of God and doing it.
Luke 11:28 - Jesus said blessed are those who hear the word of God and obey it
Hebrews 11:3 - By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God
2 Peter 3:5 - heavens existed log agaon, earth formed out of water ... word of God
Revelation 19:13 - He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is “the Word of God”

Therefore, //because we have to give an account//

since we have a great Kohen Gadol //high priest//

who has passed through the heavens, Yeshua Ben-Elohim, //Jesus son of God//

let us hold firmly to our confessed allegiance.

For we do not have a kohen gadol who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

but One who has been tempted in all the same ways

—yet without sin.

Therefore //because our high priest sympathizes withour weaknesses//

let us draw near to the throne of grace

with boldness,

so that we may receive mercy

and find grace for help in time of need.

Hebrews 5 - the High Priest is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, subject to weakness. Jesus became source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.
Hebrews 8 - New covenant, I will put my laws in their mind and write them on their hearts, they will all know me.
Hebrews 10 - Jesus, the High Priest, one sacrifice for sins, sat down at the right hand of God, waits for his enemies. One sacrifice he has made perfect (mature) forever those who are being made holy. - I will put my laws in their hearts and I will write them on their minds. Where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
Hebrews 11 - If we deliberatley kiep on sinning, after we received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left. Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy - how much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot. The Lord will judge his people, it is a dreaful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
