Days
A day’s end is not by sunset nor by midnight but by nightfall - when darkness settled.
Dawn marks the beginning of the daytime - when light broke through the darkness
Over time tradition were instituted to guard against breaking the Sabbath.
- The twighlight period - from sunset until three stars are visible is considered the in between - because the exact time the next day starts is not known. Thus sunset is set as the earliest possible defintion of nightfall/evening.
- Traditionally the daytime activities do not start until sunrise.
Between the evenings
- Hebrew bein ha-'arbayim literally means "between the two settings."
- first "setting" occurs when the sun passes its zenith just after noon and the shadows begin to lengthen,
- second "setting" is the actual sunset
