The March Brown is another classic pattern you will want to tie. Once you learn to make this fly, simply change hook sizes and colors of materials to create imitations of most of the mayfly duns inhabiting your local trout stream. My good friend Mike Valla, a serious student of the Catskill Mountains and the history of fly fishing, tied this example of that important fly.

The Mayfly Dun - March Brown fly pattern is a popular fly pattern used by fly fishermen to imitate the Mayfly Dun stage of the March Brown mayfly. This pattern is particularly effective during the early spring months when March Brown mayflies hatch in rivers and streams.

The Mayfly Dun - March Brown fly pattern is designed to mimic the appearance and behavior of a Mayfly Dun, which is the stage of the mayfly lifecycle when the insect is emerging from the water and transforming into an adult. This pattern typically features a slender, elongated body made from materials such as dubbing or yarn, which imitates the body shape of the mayfly. The wings are usually made from hackle feathers, which give the fly a realistic profile when floating on the water's surface.

When fishing with the Mayfly Dun - March Brown fly pattern, anglers often present it as a dry fly, casting it onto the water's surface and allowing it to float naturally downstream. The realistic appearance of the fly, combined with its accurate imitation of the Mayfly Dun stage, entices trout and other fish species to rise and strike.

One advantage of using the Mayfly Dun - March Brown fly pattern is its versatility. It can be fished in various water conditions and is effective in both slow-moving and fast-flowing rivers. Additionally, this pattern can be tied in different sizes and colors to match the specific mayfly species present in a particular fishing location.

Overall, the Mayfly Dun - March Brown fly pattern is a reliable choice for fly fishermen looking to imitate the Mayfly Dun stage of the March Brown mayfly. Its realistic design and versatility make it an excellent option for targeting trout and other fish species during the spring months.
