ideologies: perfect score on conservatism and from religious groups,

as well as voting in favor of oil companies (he was the largest

recipient of their largesse), but a 0-5% score from the League of

Conservation Voters (in fact the only one against Everglades

restoration). As chair, he had a great deal of power in writing

legislation, in determining when or if a bill will come to a vote,

but even who will be heard, what they will be asked, and how long

they get to speak. He limited testimony by legitimate climate

scientists but invited science fiction novelist Michael Crichton to

testify and meet with the President. In a July 28 2003 two hour

diatribe against global warming, he called it "the greatest hoax

ever perpetrated on mankind.” Inhofe draws on The Acton Institute

for the Study of Religion and Liberty, a Christian-right and

free-market economics think tank, which sees environmentalism as a

last gasp Socialist plot to limit our freedom (Scherer). He

promulgates the Oregon Petition (see Section 4.2.4) and other works

by energy industry paid "experts" Soon, Singer, Baliunas

etc (3.4.2). Moreover, Inhofe has used the judiciary power of the

Congress in lawsuits to try to suppress the peer-reviewed science of

the National Assessment on Climate Change (as did the CEQ). As

effectual he has been in the US, his "Truth squad" at the

Copenhagen conference was met with such derision it was abandoned

Inhofe might be an environmentalist's worst nightmare. The Oklahoma

committee's links to corporate funders are both easier to trace and

more infamous than its ties to religious fundamentalism, and it's

industry, electric utilities, mining, and other natural-resource

interests, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Eight of

the nine other Republican members of Inhofe's committee received an

average of $408,000 per senator from the energy and natural resource

sector over the same period. By contrast, the eight committee

Democrats and one Independent came away with an average of just

Mr. Morano as irrelevant, but could not. “He is relentless pushing

<font face="Times New Roman, serif">The

behavior of Inhofe and Barton illustrate another important thwarting

of moderating influence. Congress has the ability to investigate

(subpoena) and punish, so it in some ways functions as a judiciary.

This requires a majority in order to control chairmanships and thus

agenda. Kaiser states that in the period 2001-7, Congress virtually

abdicated oversight. After the 2010 House takeover, the GOP stated

they would investigate the EPA decision to regulate CO2 (e.g., Issa,

Sensenbrenner and Upton). They also pledged to investigate climate

scientists, even though multiple investigations have found no

wrongdoing. Their “Scopes trial” had only one scientist, who

ended up reneging on previous attacks on climate science, even though

the research was paid for by Koch, who also funded extensive

promotion of Climategate through their front groups, Americans For

Prosperity, Heritage, Heartland and Cato, as well as more than a

petitions and open letters to the president since at least Einstein

important tool. The first such ploy, the Heidelberg Petition, came

out of a tobacco industry sponsored conference and was aimed to

"The NAS Council would like to make it clear that this petition

stated in a news release. "The petition does not reflect the

conclusions of expert reports of the Academy." In fact, it

pointed out, its own prior published study had shown that "even

given the considerable uncertainties in our knowledge of the relevant

phenomena, greenhouse warming poses a potential threat sufficient to

merit prompt responses. Investment in mitigation measures acts as

insurance protection against the great uncertainties and the

possibility of dramatic surprises."</font>

petition appears to be a tactical response to a global warming

conference or other important climate initiative. Note that these

petitions require almost no resources, and when one becomes

discredited (as we observed with front groups above), they just roll

out another version or a different petition (some of the more

credible reliable names--dead people being the most reliable-- get

recycled, such as climatologist Richard Lindzen at MIT). It is

interesting that two have German names, trading on its historical

scientific prestige or perhaps to counter the idea that scientific

doubt was an American political invention. And it may be just another

instance of the mirror strategy: if legitimate science has

international conferences, so do skeptics. The strategy also allows

skeptics to cherry-pick people as well as facts (also perhaps trading

on the prestige of Einstein and NAS/Union of Concerned Scientists and

other groups that have used the strategy). Note that in their putting

out new versions and in their unwillingness to remove names, they are

in keeping with the overall tactic of never admitting fraud or even

error, while constantly peddling doubt and exaggerating even minor

errors in science (for example, the rate of Himalayan glacier melt in

the most recent IPCC report). These petitions are what Neil Postman

calls pseudo-events, a fiction created solely for the purpose of

publicity. They also play a role in boot-strapping disinformation

into the mainstream press, say by referencing a petition in an

editorial. John Coleman on the Glenn Beck show claimed that the

Oregon Petition stimulated his "research" into global

warming and his subsequent efforts to debunk climate science, and to

continue the farce that the science is in doubt.</span></font></font></font>

Christianity as one of the four dovetailing ideologies that keep the

several respects. God promised not to destroy the word again after

Frank's <i>Wrecking Crew</i> brilliantly traces the ascent, starting

in the Seventies when conservative cliques took over the Southern

baptists and the NRA, and 1978's Propostion 13 kicked off “tax-payer

rebellions” [cf Norquist name org?]. The “Reagan Revolution” is

really a mirror, a co-opting of Sixties tactics in which Young

Republicans etc cast themselves as gutsy rebels. Or more correctly,

these social/contry clubs where frast boys went to party, pad their

resume and find girls from good families were taken over by

entrepreurial ideologues like Jack Abramoff (legend has it a showing

of Patton led to a spontaneous chant of “First Strike Now!” on

Iran for holding the hostages [we installed the Shah and turned a

blind eye to his torture and death squads, as we did with others of

“our somuvabitch”es]. Later it became a ritua to chant the patton

monolgue inserting “liberals” for “Nazis.” War terminology

reigns, they want to permantly remove the left, abd College

Repubicans are the “swaord and shield” of the Reagan revoluation.

The JBS said Abramoff so innovative that he almost by himself gave

Reagan a win in Massachusetts, the heart of Kennedy country. Abramoff

is a bullying weight lifter from Beverly Hills. Abramoff installs

Grover Norquist, and they rework not only the mission but the funding

model. Traditionally the CR would go hat in hand to the RNC. The new

crew basically became a spinoff, doing its own direct mail campaigns,

and hitting up small businessmen (e.g., anti-union charities, and

then fake anti-union charities). Pissed off the RNC to the point they

threw them out of the building, but no matter as their income had

quintupled. The next innovation was to turn provacatuer posing into

rent-a-mobs (for example, protesting unionization of migrant

farmerworkers on behalf of Campbell's soup company)?). USA Foundation

and its spinoff variants went after Ralph Nader and his campus PIRGs,

as they claimed it was “sinful and tyrannical” to force students

to fund political activity (deposits on Coke bottles, clean air and

elections, fair utility rates?) they did not agree with, though

opting out required only checking a box on a form. They pimped these

services by boasting huge returns on investment (one wonders how

these compare to lobbying today, with ROI measured in four digit

percentages).</font></font>

<font color="#000000"><font face="Times New Roman, serif">Frank

points out that their other great iconic hero, aside from the

Entrepreneur was the Freedom Fighter, and their hawkish rhetoric

morphed into a kind of reality in their embrace of Angola's Jonas

Savimbi, one of the last countries to escape colonialism. The Angolan

rebels gave the CR macho street cred, also supported by apartheid

South Africa. Norquist followed him around, [had pictures taken with

AK-47] and Abramoff made a movie (with the cooperation of ___army).

Even more surreal was a kind of mirror of Woodstock with “freedom

fighters such as Nicaraguan Contras and Afghan Mujahedeen (who did

throw the USSR out, but became Taliban and Al-Qaeda]. However, Frank

describes Savimbi's group as an armed cult, and for his own interest

only he perpetuated at thirty year civil war that led to land mines,

devastation of the infrastructure and slaughter of elephants for

tusks to fund the war.</font></font>

<font color="#000000"><font face="Times New Roman, serif">Abramof

visited South Africa in 1983 to meet his counterparts, presumably

including Russel sic Crystal, who organized a followup to Jamba

“rumble in the jungle (including a former U-Boat captain). Field

trip was to a military base to watch a riot control demonstration.

Accommodations were lavish, squad of interpreters and video crew

documenting the proceedings, but expenses were paid by businessmen,

it was claimed. This evolved into the International Freedom

Foundation, which supported savimbi and opposed anti-apartheid trade

sanctions, its HW was in Washington DC and Abramoff its executive

director, though it was actually run out of South Africa by Crystall

(satellites in London and West Germany). It sponsored more

conferences, magazines and many newsletters peddling “ Liberty ,

Security and Prosperity.” Jesse Helms and James Inhofe were its

advisors. All this was funded by South Africa (mil inel?); Abramoff

asked for $450,000 for a plane for presidential candidate Jack Kemp,

which he assured them would get his people into his “kitchen

cabinet.” Casino Jack continued his hitman role by accusing the ANC

of atrocities against children in a House Republican Study Committee

hearing, and later disparaged Mandela and Ted Kennedy (leader of

sanctions). The scam was exposed in 1995.</font></font>

<font color="#000000"><font face="Times New Roman, serif">But

the biggest scandal, according to Frank, was the confluence of the

Entrepreneur and freedom Fighter in the Iran-Contra debacle. In 1983

the Congress voted to cut off funding for the Contras, as we were not

at war with Nicaragua, and news of atrocities was filtering in (Tip

O'Neil's aunt was a Maryknoll nuns, four of whom would be executed by

death squad. Abramoff met with Ollie North to try and reinstate aid

by lobbying Congress in 1985. GOP fundraiser was working widows with

a scary slideshow, raising 12 million dollars, but only about $2.7

was actually delivered to the Contras. To raise more money, North

sold arms to Iran. We might never have known, but a CIA contractor

refused to go down with the plane as he was supposed to, parachuted

abs was captured alive. North put on his freshly pressed dress

uniform, was filmed at what Spielberg called a flattering

off Ollie-mania and accompanying merch, including a series of

videotapes derived from the scary slideshow. In his 1994 race for a

Senate seat he was the leading fundraiser in the country at twenty

million, although he lost. This was all no doubt enabled by the

Iran-Contra hearings being shortened and softened by Dick Cheney on

the judiciary committee, as well as William casey dying of a brain

tumor before he could be compelled to testify. Reagan denied knowing,

then forgot knowing, then admitted he's done it, and that he knew it

was wrong, though he still believed in his heart he was

right/innocent (setting a convenient precedent for any number of

conservatives caught in inconvenient truths; Rove would take it

further by asserting that perception is more important than reality,

but Bush 43 would take it even further dismissing a reporter as

sadly, or at least quaintly “reality-based”).</font></font>

Christian radio and TV). [Black churches are important in Democratic

politics to a smaller degree, but the GOP is trying to neutralize

this by Voter ID in general and restricting early voting, especially

on Sunday]. Very conservative voters turn up in primaries (which

presumably have a high ratio of evangelicals), so incumbents are

terrified of compromising on anything, much less proactively working
