While calling for the military to be deployed to Los Angeles, Charlie Kirk uses a chart sourced to a white nationalist website

During his June 9 broadcast, Charlie Kirk used a chart sourced to the white nationalist organization American Renaissance.

The graph shows the decline of the white population in Los Angeles over multiple decades. Kirk displayed the graph after claiming, “This is the great replacement theory” — referring to a white nationalist conspiracy theory — and while saying, “You can see the white population collapse in L.A. That's intentional. They've wanted it that way.”

Kirk has a history of promoting the replacement theory and other racist myths.

The Southern Poverty Law Center labels American Renaissance a hate organization, saying it “promotes pseudo-scientific studies and research that purport to show the inferiority of blacks to whites.”

During this segment, Kirk also called on President Donald Trump to “fully deploy the military in the streets, take back the streets of LA.” Earlier in this show, he said, “We must be unafraid to declare the Insurrection Act of 1807.”

CHARLIE KIRK (HOST): We haven't even talked about reforming our legal system. We need a shutoff of all immigration in this country. Period. End of story. Moratorium. This right here should be a five-alarm fire. We knew that this was here, but my goodness, it's gonna keep on bubbling up. It's gonna keep on continuing. Because what we have here is not just the bandits of the Democrat Party, but then you have Gavin Newsom and you have Karen Bass defending what is happening in the streets. You have Gavin Newsom suing Donald Trump because he is so in favor of this.

What do you see all those different foreign flags? You have the Black liberation flag. I don't know what that is. Is that the Argentinian flag? Great. And then you have the Palestinian flag. Understand there is intersectionality here. If you want to properly understand the left, you must understand intersectionality. What do the Palestinian pro-Hamas people have to do with the white, liberal, purple-haired jihadis and then also with the La Raza folks with BLM? They all hate Christendom. They hate Western civilization. They hate what we have built. This is a global movement of freaks and misanthropes. Anti-Israel, anti-West, anti-America, anti-capitalism, anti-law, anti-order, and it all comes together. The same people that are doing the Gaza encampments are the same people that are now waving the La Raza Mexican flag. It is order versus anarchy. It is chaos versus structure. It is against everything that we believe in in the West. Everything.

And we're not gonna put up with it. I think President Trump should fully deploy the military in the streets, take back the streets of LA. Do it and do it fast. We're not gonna allow Floydapalooza happen again. Civilization's on the line. Because you know what happened in 2020? So many Black and Hispanic people got unnecessarily killed because of the rise in crime. If this mob broke into your home and killed your family, they won't defend it as a cry of protest.

This is the great replacement theory. Remember we talked about how they wanna replace white Anglo-Saxon Christian protestants with Mexican, Nicaraguans, with El Salvadorians. You have seen the result of the great replacement. In California, one in four people have been born outside the U.S. Let me say that again. One in four people in California have been born outside the U.S. You can see the white population collapse in L.A. That's intentional. They've wanted it that way.

These are not protests. These are riots. And the leaders — Karen Bass and Gavin Newsom, which I'll talk about more, are being held hostage by these insurgents. We want our country back, and we have a big heart. We have that open — you know, oh, yes. We're gonna take care of everybody. But as it says in the Bible, we're gonna build the wall like it says in the Book of Nehemiah, and we're gonna build it strong, and we're gonna build it high. And if you do not assimilate, and if you are an agent of disorder, of chaos, and confusion — adios, hasta la vista, baby. We will find you and your family, and we will return you. All 20, 25, 30 million. Every single one of you are going back.

the white nationalist group American Renaissance (AmRen) hosted their annual conference in Tennessee last weekend, where longtime attendees welcomed a new generation of “pro-white” political activists and right-wing extremist YouTube stars.

According to a post-event write-up published on AmRen’s website yesterday, the event celebrated “a palpable sense of white people awakening to their identity and destiny.” The write-up claims that AmRen founder Jared Taylor gave opening remarks at the event Friday night in which he said he had begun to doubt his “career in white advocacy” but that “the last five years have made it all worthwhile.”

Taylor has made concerted efforts with AmRen to “trickle up” into mainstream political discourse. He was recently spotted mingling with attendees at Mike Cernovich’s “Night For Freedom” event in Washington. Part of Taylor’s effort to “trickle up,” the AmRen write-up made obvious, is courting younger white nationalists affiliated with the alt-right movement.

Since no videos have been posted of speeches given at the conference, the information in this post comes directly from AmRen’s own descriptions of the weekend’s events.

Nick Fuentes, a white nationalist podcaster, reportedly spoke after Taylor. According to AmRen, Fuentes, who is just 19 years old, was “the youngest speaker at the gathering.” Fuentes has made many anti-Semitic and racist remarks during his young career and has supported anti-Semitic candidates such as Wisconsin’s Paul Nehlen (although Fuentes has since abandoned him). Earlier this year, Fuentes was seen mingling with some members of the “New Right” crowd at CPAC. According to AmRen:

[Nick Fuentes] observed how white advocacy displays an interesting generational pattern in its adherents, with many at American Renaissance either older attendees who remember the white America that has been lost or younger Americans nostalgic for a homeland they never experienced. He noted this reflects the cyclical nature of history and suggested the present is either the end or the beginning of another cycle.

[…]

Mr. Fuentes said he was warned by his friends in the established conservative movement that even though they may agree with American Renaissance, he must not attend because it would be bad for his career. He acknowledged he is likely giving up what could be a lucrative career in Conservatism Inc., but the cause of our people is more important.

Fuentes wrote onGab, a Twitter knockoff that is saturated with racism and anti-Semitism, that many people at the conference “including some of the other speakers” had told him his speech “was one of the best” and that “AmRen really is the GOLD STANDARD.”

After Fuentes’ speech, AmRen writes, white nationalist activist Adrian Davis said that “American Renaissance attendees are now younger and more evenly divided among the sexes than in the past,” before praising American white supremacist group Identity Evropa, which often targets young conservatives on college campuses for recruitment.

Marcus Follin, a bodybuilder known on YouTube as “The Golden One” who uses fitness to court people into white nationalism,*reportedly told the crowd that it was essential to make “the radical notion that we don’t want to be replaced in our own nations that we built … mainstream.” At the end of his speech, VDARE writer John Derbyshire—fired from National Review after writing a column suggesting that children avoid African Americans—reportedly had this exchange with Follin:

Referring to Mr. Follin’s impressive build and the precedent of another bodybuilder who eventually launched an American political career, John Derbyshire asked during the question and answer period if Mr. Follin’s would run for Governor of California. Mr. Follin’s response was, “I’ll be back.” Concluding the pre-dinner program by using one of Mr. Follin’s favorite terms, Jared Taylor said it had been a “glorious” day.

Another young activist, Patrick Casey of Identity Evropa, reportedly received high praise at the event from many of the conference’s old guard of white nationalist speakers. AmRen says that Casey told attendees at their conference that the group’s “flyering campaigns on college campuses, banner drops, and honoring past European-American heroes and victims of contemporary America’s multiracial madness, continue to garner nationwide headlines and draw new recruits.”

Saturday’s dinner was headlined by South African activist Simon Roche, who recently partnered with 22-year-old far-right activist Lauren Southern to create a pseudo-documentary about farm murders in South Africa. But according to the author of the AmRen post, Roche mostly avoided speaking about South Africa. Instead, he talked about the why he believed “whites can no longer justify using services and companies that fund our racial enemies”:

Mr. Roche’s primary message was not an explanation of the situation in South Africa, but a fiery challenge to whites around the world. Mr. Roche said whites should be proud of being part of a “special people,” a people who can build wonders no other culture has yet matched. He urged Americans to “get off the couch” and “arise.” Though he acknowledged whites have been deliberately harmed by external enemies, he demanded whites accept some responsibility for the situation they find themselves in. Specifically, whites can no longer justify using services and companies that fund our racial enemies, literally funding our own dispossession with the fruit of our labors.

The event also reportedly featured some of the older generation of white nationalists, including Derbyshire, Counter-Currents’ Greg Johnson, Occidental Quarterly’s Martin O’Toole and former Klu Klux Klan lawyer Sam Dickson.

At a 2017 conference hosted by the white nationalist hate group American Renaissance, Peter Brimelow, spoke about President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

“Crime in this country is ethnically variegated,” claimed Brimelow, president of the white nationalist hate group the VDARE Foundation. “There’s ethnic specialization in crime. And Hispanics do specialize in rape, particularly of children. They’re very prone to it, compared to other groups.”

Blatantly racist statements like these are commonplace for Brimelow and for Jared Taylor, president of American Renaissance, two of the most notorious white nationalist leaders in the United States.

Two years after the conference, for the first time, a prominent conservative charity would fund both VDARE and the nonprofit behind American Renaissance. DonorsTrust, a donor-advised fund sponsor that manages and disperses wealthy conservatives’ charitable funds anonymously, gave over $1.5 million to the VDARE Foundation in 2019, according to tax records obtained by the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD). That amount is nearly three times larger than VDARE’s total 2018 revenue, meaning that, with DonorsTrust’s help, the hate group was poised to significantly expand its operations last year.

DonorsTrust also gave $10,500 to the New Century Foundation, the nonprofit that finances American Renaissance, which publishes a website, videos, and podcasts and puts on annual conferences that draw a coterie of the country’s most prominent white nationalists. That donation appears to be DonorsTrust’s first to the group.

“DonorsTrust is a community of donors devoted to creating a better future,” states the group’s 2019 donor prospectus. “Our donors support charities they believe protect our nation’s constitutional liberties and strengthen civil society through private institutions rather than with government programs.”

DonorsTrust and its sister nonprofit, Donors Capital Fund, are favorite funding vehicles of Republican billionaire families such as the DeVoses, Kochs, and Mercers. Donors deposit money into individual accounts, managed by DonorsTrust or Donors Capital Fund, and direct the fund managers to deliver their money to the nonprofits of their choosing, a process that shields the donors’ identities from the public. Donor-advised funds offer a “double tax benefit” to the wealthy; when donating appreciable assets like stock or business shares into their individual funds, donors get a capital gains tax break as well as the typical charitable tax deduction.

DonorsTrust and Donors Capital Fund distributed $165 million in total grants last year, $90 million of which went to support right-wing think tanks, advocacy groups, litigation centers, media outlets, extremists, and climate deniers, CMD found.

Lawson Bader, president and CEO of DonorsTrust and Donors Capital Fund, told CMD, “DonorsTrust–like the vast majority of donor-advised funds–allows its donor-advisors and not the DAF itself, to create a list of preferred and legally recognized charitable and public-interest organizations that they individually wish to support.”

However, the organization’s donor prospectus states, “Grants from accounts are made upon request to board-approved charities.” This indicates that the DonorsTrust board must review and approve of each potential recipient. That board consists of Bader and multiple others with close ties to conservative advocacy groups and academic programs funded in part by Charles Koch.

Bader did not respond to follow-up questions about the approval process and why he and the board approved two white nationalist groups.

As he defended his organization’s substantial funding of white nationalist hate groups, Bader invoked a 1958 court case that protected the identities of donors to the Black civil rights group the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).

“The Supreme Court has made it clear that releasing names of private givers poses a direct threat of retaliation,” Bader said. “This occurred most notably in 1968 (sic) when the court struck down Alabama’s attempts to gain access to the NAACP’s donor list during the heyday of the civil rights movement.”

“We are extremely troubled by the findings in your report,” Michael Edison Hayden, a senior investigative reporter at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), told CMD. “Here, you have extremely wealthy activist donors funneling money into white nationalist groups. These are groups that traffic in the type of dehumanizing racist pseudoscience that has inspired both terrorism and government-sanctioned horrors, like so-called child separation.”

SPLC has been tracking hate activity since 1971, when it was founded “to ensure that the promise of the civil rights movement became a reality for all.”

“The sick joke, of course, is that the white nationalist movement in the U.S. poses as if they are fighting against elites,” said Hayden. “Now we know that elites are fighting alongside white nationalists, putting the lives of everyday people in danger.”

A White Nationalist Castle

It is likely that DonorsTrust’s 2019 donation of $1.5 million helped VDARE purchase an historic castle in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia for $1.4 million without a loan in February 2020. As the SPLC documented, local residents were disturbed by VDARE’s presence and feared that it would reinforce negative stereotypes of West Virginia, which is 95 percent white and one of the least diverse states in the country.

“The castle gives VDARE close access to Washington, D.C.,where they have White House allies like [senior policy adviser] Stephen Miller and [communications officer] Julia Hahn,” said Hayden. “These donations help to explain where they might have gotten that kind of money.”

Brimelow came to prominence in 1995, when he published Alien Nation, a book that argued that America has historically been dominated by white people and should remain that way. In 1999, he founded what would become the VDARE Foundation.

For years, VDARE has attacked immigrants and people of color in the U.S., and it has also trafficked in antisemitism.

“The [Jewish] objective has been control of economic resources and political power,” wrote antisemite Kevin MacDonald on VDARE’s website in 2006. “One example: overwhelming Jewish support for non-traditional immigration, which has the effect of weakening America’s historic white majority.”

MacDonald was describing a classic tenet of white nationalism around the world: that Jews destroy white society by facilitating immigration by people of color, a trope often referred to as “white genocide.”

Writing on VDARE.com two years later, American Renaissance’s Jared Taylor, who personally avoids overt antisemitism, echoed this general sentiment, claiming that “our rulers and elites welcome replacement by aliens,” and “this is a disease that is killing us.”

In recent years, VDARE has continued its toxic influence on the country.

“VDARE in particular defended the deadly Unite the Right rally staged in Charlottesville, Virginia in August of 2017and has expressed sympathies for the writings of white supremacist murderers, like the man who killed 23 people in an El Paso WalMart in 2019,” said Hayden. “Additionally, VDARE published vile, racist conspiracy theories related to the COVID-19 pandemic, helping to fuel the chaos we see now across our country.”

On YouTube, VDARE appeared to defend the racist manifesto published by the El Paso shooter. YouTube permanently banned the channel in August 2020.

Brimelow and Taylor have a close relationship and are both affiliated with the racist “alt-right” and its figurehead, Richard Spencer. And Brimelow has ties to the Trump administration beyond Miller and Hahn; Trump’s economic adviser Larry Kudlow hosted Brimelow at his home for his birthday party in 2018.

The “Black-on-White Crime” Myth

Taylor’s racist ideas have inspired deadly hate crimes.

He and American Renaissance created the “black-on-white crime” myth, a theory popular among white nationalists that, in recent years, spread online and inspired deadly terror attacks, including Dylan Roof’s 2015 murder of nine Black parishioners at a South Carolina church. Roof read about the myth via the website of the Council of Conservative Citizens, another white nationalist group with close ties to Taylor.

This myth is premised on a false argument, as stated by Taylor, that,: “The United States has neither a unique ‘culture of violence’ nor inadequate gun laws. It has a high rate of violent crime because it has a large number of violent black criminals.”

“Taylor is at the center of white supremacist propaganda,” Heidi Beirich, the former head of SPLC’s Intelligence Project, told this author in 2019. “He is THE purveyor of the black-on-white crime myth that has inspired so much violence. His ideas led to Dylann Roof and lord only knows how much more hate crime.”

After Roof’s terror attack, Taylor condemned the murders but defended both the Council of Conservative Citizens and his organization’s hateful propaganda, saying, “Our site educated [Roof]. Our site told him the truth about interracial crime.”

Reporters have revealed few donations to the New Century Foundation, a relatively small nonprofit that took in $381,000 in 2018 and less than that the year before. But Sludge exposed over $100,000 in contributions by Fidelity Charitable Gift Fund, a donor-advised fund sponsor affiliated with Fidelity Investments, over the 2016 to 2018 fiscal years.

This year, the New Century Foundation got some extra help from taxpayers. According to Accountable.us, the nonprofit received $51,600 in Paycheck Protection Program funds, which were approved by Congress to help businesses during the pandemic-caused recession.

Past Donations to Hate Groups

While its recent donations to white nationalist groups are new, DonorsTrust has a history of funding groups that the SPLC considers anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-LGBTQ hate groups.

In 2019 alone, DonorsTrust donated $916,000 to the anti-Muslim Center for Security Policy, $163,000 to the anti-Muslim David Horowitz Freedom Center, and $50,000 to the anti-immigrant Center for Immigration Studies, among other contributions to hate groups and other discriminatory organizations. In the five years prior, DonorsTrust DonorsTrust and Donors Capital Fund gave over $13 million to organizations that express anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, or anti-LGBTQ sentiments, including more than $2.7 million to nonprofits considered hate groups by SPLC.

The National Christian Foundation has given the most money to hate groups of any prominent donor-advised fund sponsor. Several donor-advised funds that are not associated with any particular political ideology or religion, including Fidelity Charitable and Vanguard Charitable, which is linked to investment firm Vanguard, have also been funding hate groups for years.

FoxNews.com op-ed attacking former Attorney General Eric Holder uncritically relied on, and linked to, a piece by white supremacist Jared Taylor that accused Democrats of subjecting “whites to outright racial plunder.” Fox News changed the link after Media Matters contacted the network.

Jeremy Carl, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, wrote a May 23 FoxNews.com op-ed complaining about a Starbucks policy allowing “anyone to spend time in its stores and use restrooms regardless of whether they make a purchase.” He also criticized the company for having engaged "Eric Holder as an adviser on diversity issues,” claiming he “has a long history of making accusations of racial discrimination, often unjustified.”

As one piece of evidence against Holder, Carl linked to a January 2015 opinion piece by Jared Taylor on the white supremacist website American Renaissance. Media Matters found the May op-ed while examining media outlets that have uncritically promoted or cited research by white supremacist media.

The Southern Poverty Law Center wrote that American Renaissance “has been one of the vilest white nationalist publications, often promoting eugenics and blatant anti-black and anti-Latino racists. In 2005 for example, after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Taylor wrote, ‘When blacks are left entirely to their own devices, Western Civilization—any kind of civilization—disappears.’” The Anti-Defamation League wrote that Taylor “upholds racial homogeneity as the key to fostering peaceful coexistence.”

Taylor’s piece was a review of conservative commentators John Fund and Hans von Spakovsky’s book Obama’s Enforcer: Eric Holder’s Justice Department. The review began by attacking Holder as “a devious, power-hungry, racial zealot” who is “probably the most racially committed black ever to hold a cabinet job” and concluded that while the Republican and Democratic parties are similar, Republicans “are less likely to subject whites to outright racial plunder.”

[scrensht]

Media Matters contacted Fox News about the op-ed and asked if the network thought the research citation was appropriate. The company did not reply but changed the link so it now directs to the Amazon page for Obama’s Enforcer. The site has not noted the change or posted an editor’s note (the op-ed’s timestamp reflects the update).

Media Matterslater contacted Carl, who stated: “Obviously I would not have intentionally cited American Renaissance in any article I wrote — I wrote this article on a very fast same-day deadline at Fox News’ request and simply missed the sourcing. I suspect I missed it because the article was discussing work by Hans Von Spakovsky from Heritage, whom I do know and whose work I trust. I likely simply erred in assuming it was by Von Spakovsky.”

Carl, who agreed with Fox's decision to change the citation, also claimed “Holder has a history of numerous racist statements and actions is beyond doubt. I don’t apologize for saying that — then or now. One doesn’t need to link to American Renaissance to make that point, and obviously I would not have intentionally done so.” He additionally suggested that because Media Matters chose to contact Fox directly first rather than the author, it was evidence we are engaging in the “harassment of a critic of leftism" instead of a "pursuit of truth.”

Black Magic

A cautious but useful endorsement of racial differences.

Taboo: Why Black Athletes Dominate Sports and Why We’re Afraid to Talk About It, Jon Entine, Public Affairs, 2000, 387 pp., $25.00.

reviewed by Thomas Jackson

To the usual yelping that accompanies the slightest dissent from racial orthodoxy, someone has finally written a book that states the obvious: blacks dominate many sports because they have a genetic edge. Bravo for author Jon Entine but bravissimo for Public Affairs publishing, which has broken with what is one of the most conformist and cowardly industries in the country (see Mr. Entine’s account below).

Only two kinds of people will be surprised or offended by this book — crazed egalitarians and people who have never watched the Olympics or a pro basketball game. Since it is the former group that sets the intellectual tone for the country, reviewers will probably either ignore this book or cluck worriedly over it, but whatever happens, another blow has been struck against anti-scientific foolishness.

But is this a good book? For people who like their racial analysis stuffed with facts and close reasoning, and devoid of pulled punches — for people who enjoy Michael Levin, Arthur Jensen, Philippe Rushton, and Richard Lynn — this is thin gruel. It’s breezy and meandering, and does its own share of clucking about the “slippery slope of racism,” but it does a great many useful and important things. And by doing them in a mass-market book that will probably find its way into the hands of a great many sports fans it could accomplish more than books by scholars and scientists.

The first useful thing Mr. Entine does is attack the goofy notion that race is some kind of optical illusion. He argues instead that race differences may be as old as the human species. He points out that whether one accepts the out-of-Africa-recent-differentiation theory or theories of dispersed evolution, “there has been ample time for [racial] differences to have evolved.”

To be sure, there is a great deal of the human genome that is common to all races, but Mr. Entine explains that tiny differences can have huge consequences. After all, he writes, dogs and humans differ in only five percent of their genome, and there are plenty of gene sequences unique to different races. Speaking of dogs, Mr. Entine notes that in 1998 the American Kennel Club recalled the latest edition of The Complete Dog Book after complaints that it perpetuated “pernicious stereotypes” about breeds rather than treating them all as equals. Breeds are the equivalent of races, he explains, adding that “the belief that dog breeds do not have stereotypical personalities is as intuitively ridiculous as claiming that there are no meaningful differences between human populations.”

Different kinds of dogs even get different diseases, just like different races of humans. Why is it so hard to accept racial differences in athletic ability, asks Mr. Entine, when it is widely accepted that the races differ in susceptibility to sickle-cell anemia, prostate cancer, Tay-Sachs disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes?

One of Mr. Entine’s most effective tactics is to use the record book to show just how concentrated certain kinds of athletic performance are in certain groups. The chart on this page, reproduced from the book, is worth studying carefully. It is a percentage analysis by race or country of origin of the 100 fastest times in the eight most common distances in track and field. In the sprints up through the 400 meters West Africans (including British, American, and Canadian blacks who are of West African origin) are crushingly dominant, but they are completely out of the picture at distances greater than 800 meters. Beginning at that distance, other Africans take over — North Africans and East Africans, especially Kenyans. At 5,000 meters, African dominance (here represented in three separate bars) exceeds 90 percent, with the remaining times held by whites. East Asians appear on the chart only in one event, the marathon. As Mr. Entine points out, only genetic differences can plausibly account for such marked athletic specialization by race.

The reason Kenya gets its own separate bar on the graph is due almost entirely to the remarkable running abilities of one tribe, the Kalenjin, who have won 70 percent of Kenya’s Olympic gold medals. Kenya’s Nandi district, in the heart of Kalenjin country, has only 1.8 percent of the country’s population but accounts for 35 percent of its top runners. Mr. Entine reports that the Kalenjin laugh at anything other than biological explanations for their prowess; they know they are naturally gifted runners. Another little-known tribe of prodigies are the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico. Mr. Entine reports they are best in the world at the gruesome 100-mile Leadville, Colorado, race that ends at an elevation of 11,000 feet. They don’t often bother to compete, but have been known to breeze to the finish in traditional sandals rather than running shoes.

In the United States, black dominance of basketball and football is virtually complete, and blacks are over-represented in baseball. For women, too, the racial differences are almost as stark, with whites offering no competition in sprints and not much in basketball. Seventy percent of the players in the National Women’s Basketball Association are black, as were nine of the ten women chosen in 1999 for the first and second all-NWBA teams.

Mr. Entine points out that during the Soviet era, there was a plausible argument to be made that with enough training white women, anyway, could compete with blacks. East German and Soviet women who had been through the national sports factories kept West Africans from dominating the sprints. Now we know that those Communist women looked so mannish and performed so well because they were doped up on steroids and hormones. Coaches wouldn’t let some of them speak to reporters or into a microphone because they had such deep voices. In the decade or so since Communism collapsed and drug testing became more sophisticated, Russian and East German athletes have dropped back in the pack to join the rest of the whites.

100 Fastest Times By Country or Ancestry

East and North Africans do not (yet) dominate women’s middle- and long-distance events, but Mr. Entine says this is only because African societies have kept women out of sports. As more African women start competing, whites and Asians will be squeezed out.

Champion sprinter Frankie Fredericks of Namibia prepares to lose.

Blacks didn’t always crush whites in sports, of course, but this was because many American sports were segregated, blacks got little training, and Africa was a primitive wilderness. Even so, the writing has been on the wall for a long time. Not since the 1950s has a white ball player had the most steals in a season, and it has been 40 years since a white man, Armin Hary of Germany, held the world record in the 100 meters.

Needless to say, it is not just American sports teams that are now larded with blacks. Only two percent of the population of Britain is black, but 20 percent of its pro soccer players are. A track meet between the Canadian and American national teams would settle only the question of who has the fastest Africans.

Physical Differences

What are the physiological correlates of black athletic superiority? Mr. Entine writes that as long ago as 1939, Eleanor Metheny of Iowa State University looked into sports biology and found that blacks had longer arms and legs, a shorter trunk, narrower hips, and heavier bones than whites. Hundreds of studies have since confirmed and supplemented her findings. We now know that West African blacks have more muscle, less fat, hands relatively longer than forearms, and feet relatively longer than lower legs (which are relatively longer than thighs). They have higher serum testosterone levels, which increases muscle mass and aggressiveness, and smaller chest and lung capacities, which is why they wear out at longer distances. Heavy bones and less fat explain why so many blacks are “sinkers” in the pool, and low lung capacity is a problem in swimming events as it is in long-distance running.

West African blacks have a larger percentage of what is called fast-twitch fiber in their muscles, which is what the body needs for explosive bursts of speed. It also helps blacks jump. The best whites can jump straight up 50 percent of their height; blacks can go over 60 percent.

East African blacks have a larger lung capacity than whites and process oxygen more efficiently. They do not suffer as much from lactic acid buildup in their muscles and are therefore less susceptible to fatigue. They naturally have the slim build of good distance runners.

Mr. Entine writes that blacks respond to athletic training more quickly than whites and require less of it. Sprinter Carl Lewis worked out only eight hours a week when he was training for the 1984 Olympics; whites may work out nearly that much in a day. East Africans can reportedly take months off from training but quickly regain top form.

This sort of thing is fascinating and entirely to the point, but there is not that much of it in Taboo. Mr. Entine could have made his case in about 100 pages. The rest of the book is taken up with stories about Kipchoge Keino and other famous Kalenjins, stories about the Communist sports factories, and a long, wandering history of race and American sports. This may be interesting to sports fans, but the chart on the previous page is worth a hundred stories about Jesse Owens and Michael Jordan. The early heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson, who snarled over prostrate white opponents and carried on publicly with white women, was a colorful figure, and very few people know professional football was (re)integrated with no fanfare the year before Jackie Robinson joined the Dodgers in 1947 — but so what? Mr. Entine seems to be trying to parry charges of “racism” with sympathetic accounts of black sportsmen who fought segregation.

Still, he has assembled the necessary facts and they all hang together. What we know about racial differences in biology conforms perfectly with what we see on the playing field and in the swimming pool. So what’s the problem? Why can’t the country admit what everyone knows and make it official? The problem — and the answer to the question in the book’s subtitle — is that honesty about athletics could lead to honesty about intelligence. This is why we have near-universal dishonesty, which leads to all sorts of nuttiness. Mr. Entine quotes Bob Herbert of the New York Times, that praising blacks for athletic ability is “a genteel way to say nigger.” An early pre-publication story about Taboo in the Times, quotes a black who says scientific investigation of athletic ability is an “underhanded way” of saying that blacks are “closer to beast … than they are to the rest of humanity” and it quotes a white as saying, “Didn’t we hear all this in Germany in 1936?” Mr. Entine has collected many examples of this sort of non-thinking.

Sadly for the egalitarians, the evidence for racial differences in intelligence is far more systematic, far more carefully studied, and much better understood than the evidence for athletic differences. Everyone knows this, which is why everyone pretends so diligently and hysterically not to.

Mr. Entine knows it, too, but tries not to show it. He has laced the book with anti-racist pieties, calls the Pioneer Fund “a magnet for white supremacists,” sneers at Lothrop Stoddard and Madison Grant, and writes happily that the 1938 rematch victory of heavyweight Joe Louis over the German Max Schmel-ing “was a knockout blow to the smug Nazis and their legion of Aryan-supremacist sympathizers around the world.” He even stoops to what can only be called disingenuousness: The book’s “only real message,” he writes, is that “for all our differences, we are far, far more similar.” That is not the book’s real message; it is a transparent sop to the censorship commissars.

However, despite all the jabber about “racism,” Mr. Entine is careful never to deny the possibility of intelligence differences. He even writes sentences like: “The evolutionary crucible has left population groups with distinct physiques, musculature, testosterone levels, metabolic efficiency, reaction time, and a slew of other characteristics.” (emphasis added) He even writes that black babies are born after a shorter gestation period and mature more quickly than white babies. He knows, all right.

Some day Americans will start saying what they really think about race. If they can’t yet talk about intelligence let them at least begin with sports. May Taboo sell and sell.

Breaking Taboos in the Publishing Industry

The Struggle to Get Taboo Published.

by Jon Entine

There are only 800 million blacks, or one in eight of the world population, but athletes of African origin hold every major world running record. Blacks make up 70 percent of the NFL and 85 percent of professional basketball. Even in sports in which blacks are not a majority — baseball, soccer, rugby, cricket, even bobsledding in some countries — blacks are represented in greater numbers than their share of the population. In my book, Taboo, I report the very uncontroversial scientific conclusion that environment and culture alone cannot explain this remarkable phenomenon.

“If you can believe that individuals of recent African ancestry are not genetically advantaged over those of European and Asian ancestry in certain athletic endeavors,” observes Vincent Sarich, a renowned biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, “then you probably could be led to believe just about anything. But such dominance will never convince those whose minds are made up that genetics plays no role in shaping the racial patterns we see in sports. When we discuss issues such as race, it pushes buttons and the cortex just shuts down.”

To the degree that it is a purely scientific debate, the evidence of black superiority in athletics is overwhelming, and decisively confirmed on the playing field. As equality of opportunity has increased in sports over the last 30 years, equality of results — the diversity of the races of the elite players — has declined. Greater opportunity has actually led to greater inequality.

Popular thinking — or at least what people are willing to say publicly — lags behind the genetic revolution, which has undercut the supposedly politically-comforting belief that all humans are created with equal potential. Evidence spilling forth from the Human Genome Project shows that some functional characteristics do differentiate populations — most clearly in the proclivity to certain diseases and in athletic ability — although the classic racial trichotomy of sub-Saharan black/European white/Asian is indeed fuzzy around the edges. Genetically-linked, highly heritable characteristics such as skeletal structure, the distribution of muscle fiber types, reflex capabilities, metabolic efficiency, lung capacity, or the ability to use energy more efficiently are not evenly distributed across racial groups and cannot be explained by known environmental factors.

But don’t expect a dispassionate public discussion about a subject that has become wholly political. Since World War II, anthropological orthodoxy has held that the very concept of race is a loaded, social construct. “People feel if you say blacks are better athletically, you’re saying they’re dumber,” Frank Deford, the respected author and sports reporter once noted. “But when Jack Nicklaus sinks a 30-foot putt, nobody thinks his IQ goes down.”

I should not have been surprised that my book would cause a brouhaha considering the rough going I faced a decade ago writing and producing an NBC documentary with Tom Brokaw, Black Athletes: Fact and Fiction. In 1988, Jimmy “the Greek” Snyder, a prognosticator with CBS Sports, had been fired and publicly ridiculed after making an off-handed comment that slave owners had bred blacks to produce the best physical specimens and that this contributed to black success in sports. Mr. Brokaw and I decided that maybe it was about time finally to address the issue openly.

The program provoked intense reaction and it divided public opinion, frequently along racial lines. A white columnist at Newsday called it “a step forward in the dialogue on race and sports” while a black writer at the same daily wrote that “NBC had scientists answer questions that none but a bigot would conjure up.” “[Mr. Brokaw] utterly ignore[d] the facts in favor of the speculation of several scientists,” charged Ralph Wiley in Emerge magazine. “His program played like a badly cast farce.” Still, Black Athletes went on to win numerous awards including Best International Sports Film.

A few years after the documentary, at the urging of literary agent Basil Kane, I circulated a book proposal to publishers to explore the issue in more depth. The reactions were consistent: “By even suggesting that blacks may have a genetic edge in sports, you are opening up the Pandora’s box of intellectual inferiority.” In other words, great proposal, racist idea.

After more than a dozen rejections, an independent-minded editor at Mac-millan, Rick Wolff, offered me a contract for what was to become Taboo. The turn of good fortune proved fleeting. Soon after, Mr. Wolff moved to Warner Books and though he wanted to take the book with him, Warner balked. “It was considered too dicey a subject,” he recalls. “Once the other editors heard it was about racial differences, they wouldn’t even let me present it at an editorial meeting.”

I was stuck with writing the book for Mr. Wolf’s eventual replacement as sports editor at Macmillan, Natalie Chapman, who knew nothing about the subject. Miss Chapman was encouraging when she reviewed the early manuscript, but then apparently got cold feet. Eight months later, she sent me the brush off. “Much of the manuscript is smoothly and elegantly written, and most of it is quite enjoyable to read. [But] while I admire the goals of the book, I must regretfully inform you that [it] lacks sufficient persuasiveness “to avoid being torn apart by critics, reviewers, and readers.”

Years of work on an important subject were suddenly in mortal danger. Basil, my agent, embarked on a full court press to find a new publisher. Again, most everyone was too frightened even to read it. Basic Books, a first-rate independent publisher affiliated with Harper-Collins, wanted to do it until an African American consultant nixed the book as “potentially racist.” One female editor lectured Basil for a half hour about how insensitive he was even to propose such an idea. Would she please read the book? “I don’t have time for such trash,” she replied.

That reaction was all the more infuriating given the lengths to which I went to bring different perspectives to the book. In recognition of the complexity of the issues in sociology, anthropology, and population genetics, I submitted the manuscript for review to a board of advisors and experts drawn from a range of races, professional expertise, and countries. To a man and woman, they loved the book and thought it fair and provocative.

“You will be accused of spouting old fashioned racism for even raising the issue of African American superiority in athletics,” wrote Earl Smith, Chairman of the Department of Sociology and Ethnic Studies at Wake Forest University, a leading black scholar and author of several books on race and sports, and one of my board members. “All this beating around the bush has to stop. This is a good book. I am quite excited with the arguments that are raised.”

Dr. Smith’s endorsement, along with reviews and letters of support from the editor of the Journal of the African American Male, the president of the Human Biology Association, Olympic Committee scientists, and top athletes didn’t make a difference. When it comes to race, “the cortex shuts down.” No one would give Taboo a chance.

The log jam broke when Geoff Shandler, an editor at PublicAffairs, another independent publisher, also affiliated with HarperCollins, read it and loved it. “I understand what you are trying to do with this book,” he wrote. “We’d be honored to do it.”

Even with a respected publisher behind the book, the hysteria continues. In early January, The New York Times magazine told me it was killing plans to publish an adaptation, calling it potentially “dangerous.” “Our reluctant decision to drop the project is no reflection of my regard for your work, which remains high,” wrote Kyle Crichton, an editor who had championed the article. “In brief, the whole subject worries my editor”.” ABC 20/20 also suddenly backed out of doing a story on Taboo. An executive explained that “higher management” got scared.

The book is now finally in the hands of the public. Will it be as skittish about the contents as the publishing industry? I doubt it. The African American community in particular has become irritated to the point of anger about the patronizing censorship and codes of silence that many journalists and institutions employ to “protect them.” Science is a method of interrogating reality, a cumulative process of testing new and more refined explanations, not an assertion of dry, inalterable facts. It is a way of asking questions, not of imposing answers. I suspect American readers of all ideological and racial stripes are far more open to dispassionate inquiry than many “leaders” of American letters.

Ideology and strategic arguments from the radical right are produced by hundreds of groups and individuals around the country. However, only a small number actually function as real think tanks, and an even smaller number are influential, even on the extreme right. The four groups profiled below, including one that was just formed last fall, may be the most important. They are also each associated with individuals who became involved in the recent dispute over anti-Semitism on the radical right. Each has said it opposes anti-Semitism, or at least anti-Semitism in its crudest forms (each of them also pushes the work of Kevin MacDonald, an academic who criticizes Jews in somewhat softer terms than most anti-Semites). One of them, the Pioneer Fund, has financially backed the racist research of many individuals associated with the other groups. All four organizations are listed as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Charles Martel Society/The Occidental Quarterly

Founded in 2001 by Chicago millionaire publishing scion William H. Regnery, the Charles Martel Society puts out The Occidental Quarterly, a journal devoted to the idea that "race informs culture" that is edited by a Who's Who of the radical right. Its chief editor is Kevin Lamb; its managing editor is Louis R. Andrews and its associate editor is Wayne Lutton, who also works at The Social Contract Press, another hate group. The board of the society includes Andrews, Lamb, *American Renaissance* Editor Jared Taylor and Sam Dickson, a white supremacist lawyer and luminary of theCouncil of Conservative Citizens. The Occidental Quarterly publishes an array of extremists including Robert S. Griffin, a University of Vermont professor who has been a member of the neo-Nazi National Alliance, and Marian Kester Coombs, wife of the managing editor of The Washington Times and a well-known racist writer. In 2004, the society went beyond publishing for the first time, holding a black-tie dinner in a fancy Washington, D.C., hotel, where it awarded Kevin MacDonald $10,000 and its Jack London Literary Prize for books describing the alleged "group evolutionary strategies" of the Jews. The Charles Martel Society and its journal have been very well received among so-called "academic racists" in America -- so much so that when Florida race scientist Glayde Whitney died in 2002, his family asked that in lieu of flowers, mourners send donations to the society.

National Policy Institute

After a year of soliciting funds for a "new think tank" in Washington, D.C., the National Policy Institute was established with a staff of four in September 2005 by far-right publisher William Regnery. The institute's mission statement says it aims "to elevate the consciousness of whites, ensure our biological and cultural continuity, and protect our civil rights. The institute ... will study the consequences of the ongoing influx that non-Western populations pose to our national identity." In an August 2005 speech to the Chicagoland Friends of American Renaissance (see group profile below), Regnery warned that "within the first or secondhand memories of people in this room, the white race may go from master of the universe to an anthropological curiosity." The institute has published two studies: a critique of affirmative action, which the institute opposes; and "Mass Deportation is a Viable Solution to America's Illegal Immigration Crisis," written by Edwin Rubenstein. (Rubenstein, a frequent contributor to the V-Dare hate site, is president of ESR Research Economic Consultants of Indianapolis and has served as research director for the conservative Hudson Institute, an adjunct fellow at the Manhattan Institute, an economics editor at the National Review, and a contributing editor at Forbes magazine.) The institute's senior fellow is Wayne Lutton, an extreme-right writer, and its spokesman is Kevin Lamb. Its board includes Louis R. Andrews, American RenaissanceEditor Jared Taylor, and James B. Taylor, who is also on the board of directors of the Reagan Ranch Program. Its advisory committee includes Kevin MacDonald.

New Century Foundation/American Renaissance

Jared Taylor, the man who heads the New Century Foundation and edits its American Renaissancemagazine, presents himself as a cosmopolitan, open-minded thinker not afraid to take on the taboos of his time without stooping to racial epithets and the like. But, in fact, he is a man who promotes the idea of America as "a self-consciously European, majority-white nation," regardless of the calm tone of his journal, which has an academic look and feel. In 2002, for instance, Taylor published an article by race scientist Richard Lynn (see Pioneer Fund, below) under the title "Race and the Psychopathic Personality" that argued that blacks "are more psychopathic than whites" and suffer from a "personality disorder" characterized by a poverty of feeling, lack of shame, pathological lying and so on. After Hurricane Katrinahit in 2005, the magazine ratcheted up its customary attacks on blacks, particularly in an error-ridden essay by Taylor that said the hurricane "was an excuse [for blacks] to loot, rob, rape and kill." American Renaissance, based in Taylor's home in Oakton, Va., also publishes frequent articles on the discredited field of eugenics -- selective breeding to improve human genetic stock. The foundation has hosted biannual conferences since 1994, and its website, featuring stories on black crime and the like, recently rose to one of the top 20,000 in the world after a makeover. In recent years, Taylor has added several budding racist intellectuals to his staff, includingIan Jobling, the website editor and E-list moderator, and Stephen Webster, assistant editor ofAmerican Renaissance. Even before he started the New Century Foundation, Taylor wrote on race, penning a 1992 book, Paved With Good Intentions, that argued because sterilizing welfare mothers would not be publicly accepted, authorities should instead provide such women with "five-year implantable contraceptives."

Pioneer Fund

The Pioneer Fund was started in 1937 by textile magnate Wycliffe Draper with an original mandate to pursue "race betterment" by promoting the genetic stock of those "deemed to be descended predominantly from white persons who settled in the original thirteen states prior to the adoption of the Constitution." Many of those involved with the fund early on, including its first president Harry H. Laughlin, had "contacts with many of the Nazi scientists whose work provided the conceptual template for Hitler's aspiration toward 'racial hygiene' in Germany," according to an article in theAlbany Law Review. In the 1960s, according to William Tucker's recent scholarly book, The Funding of Scientific Racism, many board members and recipients of Pioneer grants sought to block the civil rights movement. In recent decades, the fund has concentrated on making grants to academics interested in the alleged connection between race and intelligence, along with related matters. It also paid to distribute the racist French novel, The Camp of the Saints, and to publish an autobiography of Thomas Dixon, whose novels helped to romanticize the Klan and also to bring it back to life in 1915. Since 2002, the Pioneer Fund has been headed by J. Philippe Rushton, a Canadian professor who has produced work suggesting that blacks have "smaller brains, lower intelligence, lower cultural achievements, higher aggressiveness, lower law-abidingness, lower marital stability and less sexual restraint than whites," according to an article by psychologist Andrew S. Winston. Several organizations have recently refused grants from the fund in the wake of bad publicity. One recipient, Hiroko Arikawa of the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Mo., said she was returning her grant after being contacted for comment by the Intelligence Report.

2017

On April 20, the anti-immigrant hate group Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) began to dive into its vault and upload to YouTubeepisodes of its 51-episode series “Borderline.” The show ran on NET, a satellite TV station put together by archconservative and anti-gay bigot Paul Weyrich. So far FAIR has decided to upload just two episodes of the series.

As previously reported by the Southern Poverty Law Center, FAIR donated some of its archives to the Gelman Library at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. In these public archives are videotapes of FAIR’s entire “Borderline” series. The series featured some of the most prominent white nationalists of the past quarter century, including the now-deceased Sam Francis and Lawrence Auster as well as Peter Brimelow and Jared Taylor, two other white nationalists who are now seen as leaders in the rebranded Alt-Right movement.

The program, which opened with footage of immigrants running across the border or arriving in the U.S. in broken-down flotillas, featured racist commentary from guests and hosts alike.

On April 22, 1996, “Borderline” was hosted by then-FAIR Deputy Director K.C. McAlpin and featured Sam Francis, who had recently been fired from his job at The Washington Times for making racist comments, along with Peter Skerry of the Brookings Institution. Francis, in fact, has attracted scores to the white nationalist movement through his hundreds of essays for white nationalist outlets and speeches at racist conferences across the country. Before his death in 2005, he served as chief editor of Citizens Informer, the newsletter of the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC), the group Charleston shooter Dylann Roof cited in his manifesto as his gateway into white nationalism. The CCC has also called African Americans a “retrograde species of humanity.”

The topic of the day was, in McAlpin’s words, “the relentless march against our border — is it immigration or colonization?” The question was purely rhetorical for McAlpin, who later in the show asserted that Mexico has been “acting very much like a colonial power.” Francis very much agreed. “This is actually a process of political warfare,” Francis opined. “They encourage immigration to the North, get rid of who they don’t want and create a political lobby in this country as a kind of political bludgeon against the United States.” Skerry, who repeatedly disagreed with these sentiments, was frequently cut off.

In a segment devoted to “ethnic separatists,” McAlpin warned the audience that Mexicans want to take back the Southwest. “This is a serious issue and serious threat,” McAlpin said. “This is not just a bunch of radicals and academics and intellectuals on campuses and if the population of the Southwest continues to change in this dramatic fashion, I think we do have a serious problem.” Francis couldn’t have agreed more, saying, “I think … that you are going to have more and more political and ethnic problems as this demographic shift occurs in the Southwest.” Francis also said that Mexico was meddling in American affairs just as the Soviets and Nazis had in prior periods, “using ideological and ethnic loyalties to manipulate a political force within our own government.”

At other times, “Borderline” advanced ideas popular in white nationalist circles —not surprising, given that white nationalists were often featured on the program. Particularly popular was the idea that immigrants are destroying American culture or displacing Western civilization with degenerate, Third World ways.

Lawrence Auster, a white nationalist who spoke in 1996 to a conference put on by the racist American Renaissance was on the show on April 1, 1996, making the argument that if the U.S. loses its white majority, it will be destroyed. The topic that day, according to host Dan Stein, was to “take a politically incorrect look at American culture and Western Civilization.” Stein added, “America, love it or lose it.” (In more recent years, Stein has repeatedly insisted that neither he nor FAIR have any preference for any one race or nationality or ethnic group.) Auster argued that because of an “invasion,” “America is in the process of dissolving as a nation.” Supposedly drawing on history, Auster warned that as demographic change occurs and “the majority is threatened in its position” the result could be “civil war.”

Auster’s particular concern that day was the loss of “the historic European Anglo American culture.” Stein certainly seemed to agree with his guest’s worries. “How can we preserve America if it becomes 50% Latin American?” he asked. Stein also said that Anglos were leaving Los Angeles because it had become “a foreign country to them.”

Auster died in 2013, but a website with his writings, Views From The Right remains as a repository for his work today.

Another prominent white nationalist who appeared on “Borderline” was naturalized English immigrant Peter Brimelow, who in 1999 would go on to found the anti-immigrant hate site VDARE.com and author of Alien Nation, a book that argued America should remain white-dominated.

In a discussion about Alien Nation on Aug. 5, 1996, Stein asked Brimelow whether “America’s social and economic elites seem to be writing off the whole idea of the nation-state.” He added: “If they shift their loyalty from the nation-state, what are they loyal to?” Brimelow argued that these same elites are creating the “greatest transformation of any independent state in history” by bringing in “new minority groups that did not exist before.” Brimelow considered these elites to be “treasonous,” people who “hate our traditional culture and they see immigration as a weapon to help destroy it.” “Are they really patriots?” Brimelow asked.

On pro-immigration conservatives, Brimelow claimed that they had been traumatized by the civil rights movement in the 1960s and now support “the idea of the current [non-racist] immigration policy” mostly “so they can demonstrate repeatedly to themselves that they are not really prejudiced.” In another segment, Brimelow said, “they are constantly repressing deep racial feelings.”

Stein asked Brimelow to talk more about his statement “race is destiny in American politics.” Brimelow did, saying, “you really alter the texture of the country by bringing in different ethnic groups.” Endorsing the invasion theory, Brimelow told one caller, “you have areas of South Texas and so on that have essentially gone back to Mexico.” Stein later asked Brimelow whether this all meant “the end of the United States?” Brimelow’s answer: “Sure.”

The one videotape that seemed to be missing from the files at George Washington aired on Sept. 30, 1996 and featured prominent white nationalist Jared Taylor, whom FAIR’s founder, white nationalist John Tanton gave money to personally to start up American Renaissance, which throws annual conferences that are important gatherings on the country’s white supremacist scene. When American Renaissance was still a monthly journal it published screeds like this following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, "Blacks and whites are different. When blacks are left entirely to their own devices, Western civilization — any kind of civilization — disappears." The show’s topic was the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, which overturned the Immigration Act of 1924 and allowed non-whites to emigrate to the U.S. without being subjected to a racist national origins quota system.

FAIR clearly had no issue inviting white nationalists such as the ones mentioned above as well as former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan and Joseph Fallon, a man published in American Renaissance. It remains to be seen whether the group will admit to this particularly ugly part of its history by uploading the episodes of “Borderline” that feature white nationalists to YouTube.
