Itself riffing off a tweet from the acerbic right-wing Dutch politician <b>Geert Wilders </b>about the threat of Muslims to the Netherlands and the foreseen demographic disappearance of whites, King aped, “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.” This resulted in swift condemnation and ridicule in many quarters of the mainstream media, and King himself received bemused and angry tweets from congressional colleagues, some posting photos of their smiling multiracial children. Wife with a Purpose, who asserts that “her primary duty is having children and supporting her husband,” <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/01/opinion/sunday/tradwives-women-alt-right.html" style="box-sizing: border-box; outline: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; transition: color 0.3s ease 0s; cursor: pointer;">issued a “white baby challenge,</a>” throwing down the breeding gauntlet: “As a mother of 6, I challenge families to have as many white babies as I have contributed.” Once her challenge went viral on social media, Wife with a Purpose received much censure. In her vlog They Want You Dead White Man! Lokteff delivers an impassioned commentary as a cascade of sensationalistic headlines flash across the screen and paint a frenzied picture of relentless attacks on white men in Europe and the United States. Lokteff reminds her viewers that straight white men are the world’s great inventors and creators and, moreover, that these tolerant and kind souls always are the ones to come to rescue the less fortunate. What would the world be like without these saviors?</span></font></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; outline: none; margin: 0px 0px 17px; padding: 0px; line-height: 1.8;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman" style=""><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"> It would be “hell on earth,” she proclaims, behind a backdrop of film clips of brown and black people rioting and rickety boats of North African refugees. In a not-so-veiled threat, Lokteff warns that SJWs are taking political correctness and diversity campaigns “way too far, too fast,” and are “waking a sleeping giant.” Once roused, this mighty force of white saviors will take control, restore order, and reclaim Western civilization. </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);">The video weaves white male victimhood with racism through scaremongering and foregrounding the themes of imminent white genocide, the bias of the liberal media, and the fortification of the tribe. Regulars include Wife with a Purpose (Ayla Stewart), Bre Faucheux (before and after her online departure), Canadian white nationalists <b>Lauren Southern</b> and Faith Goldy, Lacey Lynn, and Blonde in the Belly of the Beast, who shares her experiences as a red-pilled anti-feminist living in the liberal bastion of Seattle. Also in the mix is TheBlondeButterMaker, who vlogs about organic recipes designed to nourish her family, including butter with pesto and bone broth, while endorsing a brand of white European paganism</span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">. <b>The power of these alt-right women to push the Overton window and move alt-right discourse into the mainstream should not be underestimated. </b>These are not just amicable Google chats with women with conservative leanings but virtual salons that make scorching and simplistic critiques of feminism, globalism, diversity, and multiculturalism sound urgent, sexy, and like plain old common sense to some ears. <b>These women position themselves as the new counterculture, pitting themselves against a more backward Left. </b>According to Lokteff, “A lot of these liberal women, they’re not risk-takers, even though they have piercings or blue hair. . . . What we do, the things we talk about, I don’t think it can get any more high-risk.” They fancy themselves alt-right handmaidens of a reinvigorated white culture and spokeswomen for their ostensibly beleaguered male defenders.</span></font></p><p style="box-sizing: border-box; outline: none; margin: 0px 0px 17px; padding: 0px; line-height: 1.8;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman" style=""><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Alt-right women are traversing a tightrope, and they seem to believe it’s a sturdy one gripped firmly by their white male heroes. Yet the experiences of women like </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);">Faucheux, who unwittingly left social media under clouded circumstances </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">and now, only with the protection of a wedding ring, can plot her return, reveals the precariousness of this balancing act. Nevertheless, any examination of the alt-right must explore the networked and affective domains of white nationalist women. They give their videos titles like “Female Nature and Advice for Young Ladies,” “How I Homeschool” and “You Might be a Millennial Housewife If….”</p><p class="css-exrw3m evys1bk0" style="margin: 0px 0px 0.9375rem; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; line-height: 1.875rem; font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, " times="times" new="new" roman="roman" serif="serif" vertical-align="vertical-align" baseline="baseline" width="width" px="px" max-width="max-width"><b>But running alongside what could be mistaken for a peculiar style of mommy-vlogging is a virulent strain of white nationalism. </b><span style="font-weight: inherit;">One such advocate who calls herself “Wife With a Purpose” made international headlines last year when she issued something she titled “<a class="css-1g7m0tk" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx65xKQMK0w" title="" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="blank" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(50, 104, 145);">the white baby challenge</a>.” Citing falling white birthrates in the West, she urged her followers to procreate. “I’ve made six!” she wrote. “Match or beat me!” Wife With a Purpose might be the most prominent and certainly most openly white supremacist of the women who call themselves tradwives, but she is not an anomaly: These accounts veer dizzyingly from Cosmo-style tips on pleasing your husband to racist musings about “ghetto music” to, on some occasions, calls to reassert their vision of the white race. The seemingly anachronistic way they dress is no accident. <span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);">The deliberately hyperfeminine aesthetics are constructed precisely to mask the authoritarianism of their ideology.</span></span></p><p class="css-exrw3m evys1bk0" style="font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; line-height: 1.875rem; font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, " times="times" new="new" roman="roman" serif="serif" vertical-align="vertical-align" baseline="baseline" width="width" px="px" max-width="max-width">There is nothing particularly new about this message within the far right. And tradwives still constitute a niche digital subculture. The alt-right is abhorrent; it is racist and hate-filled. But it is, like any other mass movement, also driven by a sense of dissatisfaction with modern life. Tradwives help us understand the sources of that dissatisfaction by revealing points of overlap between red-lipsticked mothers of six and the men who complain of being “kissless virgins.”</span></p><p class="css-exrw3m evys1bk0" style="font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 0.9375rem; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; line-height: 1.875rem; font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, " times="times" new="new" roman="roman" serif="serif" vertical-align="vertical-align" baseline="baseline" width="width" px="px" max-width="max-width">A frustrated yearning for a mythic past of material abundance, at a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult for young people to build careers and achieve financial security, is not gender-specific. Young people face ever more obstacles, higher demands and continually dwindling returns in the form of work benefits, job security and pay.<span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);"> We shouldn’t underestimate how some young white women, when faced with this bleak economic landscape and then presented with a rosy image of 1950s domestic bliss, may look back to 1960s Friedan-era feminism as having cheated them out of a family and a luxurious lifestyle, all supported by a single income</span>. The men on the alt-right might point to diversity initiatives and mass immigration as having dismantled their career prospects; the women are furious that they have to consider career prospects at all.</p><p class="css-exrw3m evys1bk0" style="font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 0.9375rem; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; line-height: 1.875rem; font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, " times="times" new="new" roman="roman" serif="serif" vertical-align="vertical-align" baseline="baseline" width="width" px="px" max-width="max-width"><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);">Tradwives also point to the ways that the half-finished work of the sexual revolution has brought about not just male but also female discontents. The likes of pickup artists and incels claim that the sexual revolution has brought about a consequence-free life of pleasure for young women, while socially awkward or unattractive men are left behind. But the existence of tradwives points to a more nuanced reality. Female fears of objectification and sexual violence remain as potent as ever; the tradwife subculture exploits them by blaming modernity for such phenomena, and then offers chastity, marriage and motherhood as an escape. As one such YouTube commentator, a teenager, told her audience, traditionalism does “what feminism is supposed to do” in preventing women from being made into “sexual objects” and treated “like a whore.”</span></p><p class="css-exrw3m evys1bk0" style="font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 0.9375rem; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; line-height: 1.875rem; font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, " times="times" new="new" roman="roman" serif="serif" vertical-align="vertical-align" baseline="baseline" width="width" px="px" max-width="max-width">It’s a lie, of course. Modesty has never been a safeguard against degradation or rape, and we know that a rapist is no less likely to hurt a woman simply because he’s married to her. But it’s not difficult to see how it could be a seductive lie; the continuous headlines made by the #MeToo movement, paradoxically, were eagerly shared among tradwife networks, as supposed proof that sexual liberation had made life unacceptably dangerous for women.</p><p class="css-exrw3m evys1bk0" style="margin: 0px 0px 0.9375rem; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; line-height: 1.875rem; font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, " times="times" new="new" roman="roman" serif="serif" vertical-align="vertical-align" baseline="baseline" width="width" px="px" max-width="max-width"><span style="font-weight: inherit; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);">At present, these shared dissatisfactions haven’t helped the alt-right recruit significant numbers of women because, quite simply, the men cannot keep their seething misogyny in check. Women, even those initially sympathetic to alt-right ideas, face blistering hostility on alt-right message boards and forums when they try to participate. </span><span style="font-weight: inherit;">Several longtime alt-right commentators have begun to post lengthy warnings denouncing “ trad thots” — women they deem disingenuous in their support — who they say latch onto the movement as a source of fame or money. Lauren Southern, an alt-right YouTube commentator, recently put out a video called “</span><a class="css-1g7m0tk" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-UKPpmQlys" title="" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="blank" style="font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; vertical-align: baseline; color: rgb(50, 104, 145);">Why I’m Not Married</a><span style="font-weight: inherit;">,” in which she pleaded with her audience to stop calling her a “degenerate” for not being married with children at age 22. </span><b>It’s exceedingly difficult to feel sorry for Ms. Southern, whose stunts have included attempting to block direly needed refugee rescue boats off the coast of Italy. </b><span style="font-weight: inherit;">But it’s understandable that even women with white nationalist sympathies may not be leaping to sign up for this kind of treatment.</span></p><p class="css-exrw3m evys1bk0" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 1.25rem; line-height: 1.875rem; font-family: nyt-imperial, georgia, " times="times" new="new" roman="roman" serif="serif" vertical-align="vertical-align" baseline="baseline" width="width" px="px" max-width="max-width"><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);"><b>Like most political networks primarily based on the internet, the alt-right evolved extremely fast. </b><span style="font-weight: inherit;">When I began studying digital anti-feminist and far-right networks for my doctorate in 2015, the number of women in these spaces seemed small enough to be insignificant. There has since been such a surfeit of women beginning careers off such networks, many infusing their particular brand of far-right ideology with “trad” rhetoric, that it now seems irresponsible </span><em class="css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0" style="font-weight: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; text-size-adjust: 100%; font-variant: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">not</em><span style="font-weight: inherit;"> to think about them, their roles and what they reveal. </span></span><span style="font-weight: inherit;">The material conditions that allow far-right movements to thrive seem unlikely to change, and feminism’s work is far from done in countering the kind of sexual anxieties that the alt-right exploits. She and Palmgren divide their time between America and Sweden — he was born and raised there — and they were spending the spring in the Lowcountry. Lokteff had suggested that we convene at a posh rooftop bar, where we sat on faux-wicker benches as European pop music pounded from nearby speakers and wind pummeled the white tarp over our heads.</div><div>
</div><div>In an email exchange, Lokteff had extolled the alt-right as “incredibly diverse, just not racially,” with “pagans, Christians, atheists, agnostics and even a few Satanists.” At the bar, she spoke of ideological diversity: free-market capitalists and national socialists — Hitler references notwithstanding, she prefers not to use the term “Nazis” — who find common ground on matters of race. Alt-right men, she added, tend toward a certain comportment. “They’re more alpha-male types,” Lokteff told me. “Girls are kind of sick of the neutered-down, feminist, limp-wristed guy,” she added, flopping one of her hands to demonstrate.</div><div>
</div><div>According to Keegan Hankes, a researcher at the Southern Poverty Law Center (S.P.L.C.), the alt-right is only superficially heterogeneous. “They have all these conflicting and complementary ideas entangled,” he told me, “so that they can pivot” in arguments and interviews. However, Hankes noted, “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”</div><div>
</div><div>The alt-right derives from the same impulses that have launched other white extremist groups, including a belief that “white civilization, the white race in particular, is imperiled,” said George Michael, a professor of criminal justice at Westfield State University, who studies right-wing extremism. This fear often emerges on the coattails of momentous change: the post?Civil War era of black emancipation, the transatlantic immigration waves of the early twentieth century, the Great Depression, the civil rights movement. Alt-right supporters point out that America was 80 percent white in 1980, but is barely 60 percent white today. They denounce rising rates of interracial marriage, liberal immigration policies, the Black Lives Matter movement, and the targeting of “white privilege” by academics and the media. The European contingent, meanwhile, bemoans the flow of refugees from Africa and the Middle East.</div><div>
</div><div>At the same time, social-science research sheds some light on the movement’s appeal to individuals who profess to be seeking truth or purpose. The work of the political scientists Joseph E. Uscinski and Joseph M. Parent suggests that people who experience anxiety and loss of control over their personal circumstances are more likely to adopt fringe beliefs. This March, psychologists at Princeton published a study showing that ostracism also enhances belief in conspiracy theories.</div><div>
</div><div>The alt-right, Michael explained, benefits from the bullhorn the internet provides and from savvy branding engineered by its leaders. “They tend to frame their arguments less in the verbiage of supremacy and more in the verbiage of self-defense,” he said. “It’s more palatable.” Nonetheless, the S.P.L.C. designates various entities in the alt-right as hate groups, including the Daily Stormer and Richard Spencer’s “think tank,” the National Policy Institute (N.P.I.).</div><div>
</div><div>The din the alt-right has managed to create belies its undoubtedly marginal position relative to other political movements: Less than half of Americans polled in December 2016 had even heard of it, and the size of its ranks is unknown. “What sets it apart,” according to George Hawley, the author of the forthcoming Making Sense of the Alt-Right, “is the ability to troll itself into the conversation.” Supporters draw attention to themselves online, he told me, “by acting as parasites, starting fights with people who have hundreds of thousands of followers.” In amateur videos, anonymous comments, and pithy tweets, they mercilessly mock people they disagree with, hoping to fluster or offend. Many supporters harbor anti-Semitic views yet like to cite Rules for Radicals, a 1971 manual for social change by the Jewish community organizer Saul Alinsky, as required reading.2 “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon,” Alinsky wrote. “It infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.”</div><div>
</div><div>2 This winter, an ideological rift created a new label, “alt-lite,” which applies to a cohort that takes a softer line on the issue, largely avoiding criticism of Jewish influence on government and culture.</div><div>On the internet, alt-right pundits can control their narratives and, if they want, hide behind handles and avatars. Acolytes say anonymity is necessary because they’re part of a misunderstood counterculture; exposure could cost them jobs and friends, even invite violence. The digital netherworld, however, is also a haven for hate speech. Users kicked off Twitter for abusive language can easily start new accounts. Or they can move over to Gab, an alt-right-friendly messaging platform whose guidelines proclaim, “The only valid form of censorship is an individual’s own choice to opt-out.”</div><div>
</div><div>In Charleston, Lokteff explained how Red Ice entered this arena. Palmgren launched the company in 2002 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Its name refers to a Norse myth in which the world was created in a cosmic void between two realms — one frozen, one red-hot. Red Ice disseminated conspiracy theories about U.F.O.’s, Freemasons, the Illuminati, and 9/11. Then, around 2012, the outlet shifted its attention to conspiracies about race — the idea that liberals were perpetrating a white genocide, for instance. It also began to question the Holocaust. The company’s tagline was “Dispelling the Mythmakers.” 3</div><div>

</div><div>Red Ice found a new audience in the nascent alt-right and now serves as a digital hub for the movement. It produces newscasts of events like the Stockholm conference and Spencer’s protest in May against the removal of a Confederate monument in Virginia. Its bread and butter, though, is weekly talk-radio-style programs. The segments are available in audio and video formats, much like Rush Limbaugh’s in-studio streams, and reach more than 120,000 subscribers on YouTube. Red Ice also has paying members, who can access additional content. Lokteff declined to reveal the number of members, but each one shells out seven dollars a month — “the cost of a hipster coffee,” as she put it.</div></div><div><font size="4" face="Times New Roman">

Infowars — whose founder and host, Alex Jones, claims Sandy Hook didn’t happen, Michelle Obama is a man, and 9/11 was an inside job — broadcasts to 2 million subscribers on YouTube. So does Michael “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/DangerAndPlay" target="blank" style="box-sizing: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;">Gorilla Mindset</a>” Cernovich. So too do a whole genre of lesser-known but still wildly popular YouTubers, people like Seaman and Stefan Molyneux (an Irishman closely <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypnC5-M7PhQ&list=PLMNj_r5bccUyulYsatrzNGIvasrOeBy_Y" target="blank" style="box-sizing: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;">associated with the popular “Truth About” format</a>). As do a related breed of prolific political-correctness watchdogs like Paul Joseph Watson and Sargon of Akkad (real name: Carl Benjamin), whose videos focus on the supposed hypocrisies of modern liberal culture and the ways they leave Western democracy open to a hostile Islamic takeover. As do a related group of conspiratorial white-identity vloggers like <b>Red Ice TV,</b> which regularly hosts neo-Nazis in its videos.</span><br style="box-sizing: inherit;" /></font></p><p proxima="Proxima" nova="Nova" helvetica="Helvetica" arial="Arial" sans-serif="sans-serif" style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman">“The internet provides people with access to more points of view than ever before," YouTube wrote in a statement. The videos here are featured using criteria informed by, among other things, Google News. Back then, it felt reasonable to hope the site would change politics by bypassing a rose-tinted broadcast media filter to hold politicians accountable. As recently as 2012, <i style="box-sizing: inherit;">Mother Jones</i> posted to YouTube hidden footage of Mitt Romney discussing the “47%” of the electorate who would never vote for him, a video that may have swung the election. But by the time the 2016 campaign hit its stride, and a series of widely broadcast, ugly comments by then-candidate Trump <i style="box-sizing: inherit;">didn’t</i> keep him out of office, YouTube’s relationship to politics had changed.</font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman"><b>Today, it fills the enormous trough of right-leaning conspiracy and revisionist historical content into which the vast, ravening right-wing social internet lowers its jaws to drink. </b><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);">Shared widely everywhere from <a href="https://www.stormfront.org/forum/f36/?s=d5ce84a9e463eb54e697b3ab06bce09d" target="blank" style="box-sizing: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;">white supremacist message boards</a> to chans to Facebook groups, these videos constitute a kind of crowdsourced, predigested ideological education, offering the “Truth” about everything from <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaoRQ-PydWs" target="blank" style="box-sizing: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;">Michelle Obama’s <i style="box-sizing: inherit;">real</i> biological sex</a> (760,000 views!) to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoqW3bd6FfE" target="blank" style="box-sizing: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;">why medieval Islamic civilization wasn’t actually advanced</a>.</span></font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman"><b>Frequently, the videos consist of little more than screenshots of a Reddit “investigation” laid out chronologically, set to ominous music. </b>Other times, they’re very simple, featuring a man in a sparse room speaking directly into his webcam, or a very fast monotone narration over a series of photographs with effects straight out of iMovie.<b> There’s a financial incentive for vloggers to make as many videos as cheaply they can; the more videos you make, the more likely one is to go viral</b>.<span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);"> David Seaman’s videos typically garner more than 50,000 views and often exceed 100,000. Many of Seaman’s videos adjoin ads for major brands. A preroll ad for Asana, the productivity software, precedes a video entitled “WIKILEAKS: Illuminati Rothschild Influence & Simulation Theory”; before “Pizzagate: Do We Know the Full Scope Yet?!” it’s an ad for Uber, and before “HILLARY CLINTON'S HORROR SHOW,” one for a new Fox comedy. (Most YouTubers have no direct control over which brands' ads run next to their videos, and vice versa.)</span></font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman"><b>This trough isn’t just wide, it’s deep. A YouTube search for the term “The Truth About the Holocaust” returns half a million results</b>. The top 10 are all Holocaust-denying or Holocaust-skeptical. (Sample titles: “The Greatest Lie Ever Told,” which has 500,000 views; “The Great Jewish Lie”; “The Sick Lies of a Holocaust™ 'Survivor.'”) Say the half million videos average about 10 minutes. That works out to 5 million minutes, or about 10 years, of “Truth About the Holocaust.”</font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);">Meanwhile, “The Truth About Pizzagate” returns a quarter of a million results, including “PizzaGate Definitive Factcheck: Oh My God” (620,000 views and counting) and “The Men Who Knew Too Much About PizzaGate” (who, per a teaser image, include retired Gen. Michael Flynn and Andrew Breitbart).</font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman"><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);">Sometimes, these videos go<b> hugely viral. </b>“With Open Gates: The Forced Collective Suicide of European Nations” — an alarming 20-minute video about Muslim immigration to Europe <a href="http://www.snopes.com/2015/11/17/disturbing-muslim-refugee-video/" target="blank" style="box-sizing: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;">featuring deceptive editing and debunked footage</a> — received some 4 million views in late 2015 before being taken down by YouTube over a copyright claim. (</span>Infowars: “YouTube Scrambles to Censor Viral Video Exposing Migrant Invasion.”) That’s roughly as many people as watched the <i style="box-sizing: inherit;">Game of Thrones</i> Season 3 premiere. It’s since been scrubbed of the copyrighted music and reuploaded dozens of times.</font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman"><b>First circulated by white supremacist blogs and chans, “With Gates Wide Open” gained social steam until it was picked up by Breitbart, at which point it exploded, blazing the viral trail by which conspiracy-right “Truth” videos now travel</b>. Last week, President Trump incensed the nation of Sweden by falsely implying that it had recently suffered a terrorist attack. Later, he clarified in a tweet that he was referring to a Fox News segment. That segment featured footage from a viral YouTube documentary, <i style="box-sizing: inherit;">Stockholm Syndrome</i>, about the dangers of Muslim immigration into Europe. Sources featured in the documentary have since accused its director, Ami Horowitz, of “bad journalism” for taking their answers out of context.</font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman">So what responsibility, if any, does YouTube bear for the universe of often conspiratorial, sometimes bigoted, frequently incorrect information that it pays its creators to host, and that is now being filtered up to the most powerful person in the world? Legally, per the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which absolves service providers of liability for content they host, none. But morally and ethically, shouldn’t YouTube be asking itself the same hard questions as Facebook and Twitter about the role it plays in a representative democracy? How do those questions change because YouTube is literally paying people to upload bad information?</font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman">And practically, if YouTube decided to crack down, could it really do anything?</font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman"><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 102);"><b>YouTube does </b><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/sep/02/youtube-video-ads-youtubers-advertiser-friendly" target="blank" style="box-sizing: inherit; text-decoration-line: none;"><b>“demonitize” videos that it deems “not advertiser-friendly,</b>”</a> and last week, following a report in the <i style="box-sizing: inherit;">Wall Street Journal</i> that Disney had nixed a sponsorship deal with the YouTube superstar PewDiePie over anti-Semitic content in his videos,</span> YouTube pulled his channel from its premium ad network. But such steps have tended to follow public pressure and have only affected extremely famous YouTubers. And it’s not like PewDiePie will go hungry; he can still run ads on his videos, which regularly do millions of views.</font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman">Ultimately, the platform may be so huge as to be ungovernable: Users upload 400 hours of video to YouTube every minute. One possibility is drawing a firmer line between content the company officially designates as news and everything else; YouTube has a dedicated News vertical that pulls in videos from publishers approved by Google News.</font></p><p style="box-sizing: inherit; margin: 0px 0px 1rem; padding: 0px;"><font size="4" face="Times New Roman">Even there, though, YouTube has its work cut out for it. On a recent evening, the first result I saw under the “Live Now - News” subsection of youtube.com/news was the Infowars “Defense of Liberty 13 Hour Special Broadcast.” Alex Jones was staring into the camera</font></p><div><font size="4" face="Times New Roman"></font></div></div><div><font size="4" face="Times New Roman"></font></div><div><font size="4" face="Times New Roman">Richard’s March 4th event ended up with no speakers other than himself. And, despite his public distancing from the Alt-Right, he is currently using the Alt-right website Wesearchr to fundraise for future organizing efforts in the hopes that he can quit his job and become a full-time political organizer. Ironic, given the unfounded right-wing conspiracy that the Left is full of professional paid protesters and the fact that Black is an “anarcho”-capitalist but is hoping that mutual aid from fascists will allow him to stop being a wage slave. This has led some in his own political networks to question his integrity and motives for organizing these rallies.</font></div><div><font size="4" face="Times New Roman">

He seems to be motivated by a desire for fame and attention, and cares very little for the people he is calling on to help him get it. Richard abandoned his friends and headed right back to southern California once he realized he was in over his head. Back at home, Richard fielded interviews and collected donations, none of which were shared with any of the arrested or injured on his side, and there were many. Everyone else was left on their own, except for<b> Kyle Chapman</b>, whose donation pages Richard shared in hopes of bailing Chapman out of jail as soon as possible. It’s not surprising that Richard would put the effort into fundraising for Chapman and maintaining a link to him, as “Based Stick Man” has received for more fame and attention in a matter of days than Black has been able to garner in months.</font></div><div><font size="4" face="Times New Roman">
